CHAPTER 6 – The Grave Was Never Hers

Richard could barely stand.
His wife... alive.
For twenty-three years, he had mourned a woman whose grave held nothing but ashes and lies.
"Sarah..." he whispered, reaching toward her.
She collapsed into his arms.
"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "They made the world believe I was dead."
Emily stared at her mother in disbelief.
Neither of them had known the other was alive.
For the first time in twenty-three years...
The Hayes family stood together.
But the reunion lasted only seconds.
Victor suddenly burst into laughter.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, yet he looked strangely calm.
"You still don't understand, do you?" he said.
Richard glared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor slowly reached into his jacket and tossed a thick folder onto the floor.
Across the front were three words that froze everyone.
PROJECT PHOENIX.
Inside were hundreds of photographs.
Missing children.
Forged death certificates.
Secret adoption records.
Hidden bank accounts.
Every crime committed over the last three decades had been carefully documented.
Richard's hands shook as he flipped through the pages.
Emily's file.
The baby's file.
Even Richard's own medical records.
Someone had been watching them for years.
Then Sarah whispered something that made the room fall silent.
"Victor didn't create Project Phoenix."
"He worked for it."
The detective's eyes widened.
Victor stopped smiling.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
Richard slowly asked,
"Who is in charge?"
Sarah answered with tears in her eyes.
"My father."
Everyone stared at her.
Richard could hardly breathe.
"Your father died thirty years ago."
Sarah slowly shook her head.
"No..."
"He faked his death."
"He built an organization that stole children, erased identities, and controlled judges, politicians, police officers... anyone who stood in his way."
Emily felt her knees weaken.
"So... Grandpa is alive?"
Before Sarah could answer...
Every light inside the mansion suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then...
A slow clap echoed from the balcony above.
One...
Two...
Three.
The lights flickered back on.
An elderly man in an elegant black suit stood overlooking them with dozens of armed guards behind him.
His silver hair was perfectly combed.
His smile was calm.
Almost grandfatherly.
Until he spoke.
"Sarah..."
"You've disappointed me."
Emily's heart pounded.
Richard tightened his grip on Sarah's hand.
The old man looked toward the sleeping baby.
Then smiled.
"My great-granddaughter..."
"At last."
Richard stepped forward.
"You'll never touch her."
The old man chuckled.
"My dear Richard..."
"I don't want the baby."
He pointed directly at Emily.
"I came for my daughter."
Sarah's face turned ghostly pale.
She whispered the words no one was prepared to hear.
"Emily..."
"He isn't your grandfather."
"He..."
"...is your real father."
Silence exploded through the mansion.
Emily staggered backward.
Richard stared at Sarah in horror.
Victor lowered his head, realizing the biggest secret of all had finally been exposed.
Everything Richard believed about his family...
His marriage...
Even Emily's birth...
May you like
Had been a carefully constructed lie.
And the true mastermind had only just entered the game.
