Chapter 1: The Package That Should Never Have Arrived

Emma had spent the last six months convincing herself that her husband was gone forever.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just an empty closet, a disconnected phone number, and a wedding ring left neatly on the kitchen counter.
Everyone told her the same thing.
"Move on."
"He's not coming back."
"You deserve better."
Eventually, she stopped crying.
She deleted his photos.
She forced herself to believe the nightmare was finally over.
Until...
Three sharp knocks echoed through her apartment hallway.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Emma opened the door to find a delivery driver holding a plain brown box.
"No signature needed," he said quietly.
She frowned.
"There must be some mistake."
The driver checked the label again.
"No, ma'am."
"It's addressed to Emma Carter."
"From... no sender."
Her stomach tightened.
She hadn't ordered anything.
Still confused, she accepted the package.
As the driver walked away, he suddenly stopped, glanced back at her, and muttered something strange.
"I've delivered thousands of packages..."
"...I've never seen one with today's shipping date..."
"...and a mailing date from six months ago."
Before Emma could ask what he meant...
He hurried into the elevator.
The doors closed.
Gone.
She locked the apartment door.
The silence suddenly felt suffocating.
The box wasn't heavy.
Almost too light.
There was no company logo.
No barcode.
Only her name...
Written in handwriting she recognized instantly.
Her husband's.
Her hands began to shake.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
She traced the ink with her fingertips.
Every letter.
Every curve.
Exactly the way Daniel always wrote her name.
Someone had to be playing a cruel joke.
Slowly...
She cut through the tape.
Inside was another smaller box.
Wrapped carefully.
Beneath it lay a single folded note.
Her breathing stopped.
The note contained only one sentence.
"If you're reading this... it means I didn't survive."
Emma's knees nearly gave out.
Tears blurred her vision.
"No..."
"No, Daniel..."
With trembling fingers, she opened the smaller box.
Inside was an old silver key...
A USB drive...
And a tiny velvet pouch.
She opened the pouch first.
A wedding ring.
Daniel's wedding ring.
The same one she had buried six months ago after police officially declared him missing.
Emma dropped it onto the floor.
It couldn't be.
She had watched them seal his belongings.
She had watched them lower an empty coffin into the ground.
Then...
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number.
She hesitated.
Accepted the call.
A man's whisper came through the speaker.
Barely audible.
"Emma..."
"If you opened the box..."
"...they know where you are."
The call disconnected.
At that exact second...
Someone knocked on her apartment door again.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Emma froze.
She looked through the peephole.
No one was there.
But taped to the outside of her door...
Was another envelope.
This one had only four handwritten words.
"DON'T TRUST THE POLICE."
Emma slowly backed away from the door, her heartbeat pounding in her ears.
She thought losing her husband had been the end of her nightmare.
She had no idea...
May you like
It was only the beginning.
