Chapter 5: The Woman Who Never Existed

The lighthouse shook as the first explosion ripped through the cliffs below.

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Outside, military helicopters circled like vultures, their searchlights cutting through the storm.

Emma stood frozen.

The old radio hissed again.

"Emma..."

Michael's voice was weak but unmistakable.

"Listen carefully."

"You only have one chance."

Jacob lunged toward the radio.

"Turn it off!"

Emma pulled it away.

"No!"

Jacob's face was filled with panic—not anger.

"He's leading you into a trap!"

Michael spoke again.

"Emma..."

"If Jacob wanted you dead..."

"...he's had twelve years to do it."

Jacob closed his eyes.

For a brief moment...

He looked relieved.

"He told you the truth," Jacob whispered.

Emma stared at him in confusion.

"You believe him?"

"I know his voice."

"And I know he wouldn't waste his last chance by lying."

The radio crackled violently.

"They've hacked the frequency," Michael said.

"I don't have much time."

"Whatever Ashcroft tells you..."

"...remember one thing."

"You were never the target."

"You were the key."

The transmission died.

Silence.

Jacob grabbed Emma's arm.

"We have to move."

He pulled a rusted cabinet away from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden steel hatch.

"A tunnel?"

"My emergency exit."

The hatch opened into a narrow underground passage beneath the lighthouse.

As they climbed down, another explosion rocked the building.

The ceiling above collapsed.

Seconds later, soldiers stormed the room they had just abandoned.

Jacob sealed the hatch behind them.

Darkness swallowed everything except the glow of a small flashlight.

The tunnel stretched beneath the coastline for what felt like miles.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Emma broke the silence.

"Tell me everything."

Jacob nodded slowly.

"You deserve that."

"Twelve years ago," he began, "I wasn't killed in Afghanistan."

"I was recruited."

"By Project Lazarus."

"They knew I would never betray my country."

"So they convinced me I was saving it."

Emma listened without interrupting.

"They showed me fake intelligence."

"They claimed America was being infiltrated by people whose identities had been erased."

"They needed soldiers willing to disappear."

"So you volunteered."

Jacob nodded.

"I became someone else."

"They erased my records."

"My fingerprints."

"My military history."

"Even Mom believed I was dead."

Emma felt another piece of her past shatter.

Jacob continued.

"Years later..."

"They assigned a new agent."

"Michael Reeves."

"The man you knew as Daniel."

Jacob stopped walking.

"He wasn't supposed to fall in love with you."

"He was supposed to study you."

"Report everything."

"Protect you from anyone trying to steal your DNA."

Emma whispered,

"So none of it was real?"

Jacob looked her directly in the eyes.

"At first?"

"No."

"But then..."

"He stopped sending reports."

"He refused orders."

"He married you without permission."

"He chose you."

Emma covered her face.

Every memory now carried two meanings.

Had Michael kissed her because he loved her...

Or because it was part of his mission?

The tunnel finally opened into an abandoned subway platform.

Dust covered everything.

Old trains sat rusting on forgotten tracks.

Jacob led Emma into a maintenance room hidden behind a broken ticket office.

Inside waited an elderly woman.

Gray hair.

Round glasses.

Simple clothes.

She looked more like a retired schoolteacher than a fugitive.

Jacob smiled.

"Dr. Evelyn Brooks."

Emma frowned.

"The geneticist?"

Dr. Brooks nodded.

"I've been waiting a long time to meet you."

Emma stepped back.

"You worked on Project Lazarus."

"I created it."

The room became silent.

Emma's breathing quickened.

"You..."

"You created all of this?"

Tears filled the old woman's eyes.

"I created the science."

"Ashcroft created the nightmare."

Dr. Brooks unlocked a thick metal briefcase.

Inside lay hundreds of handwritten research journals.

Photographs.

Medical files.

DNA sequences.

She carefully removed one faded photograph.

It showed three young scientists standing together.

Ashcroft.

Dr. Brooks.

And...

Emma's mother.

Emma's voice trembled.

"My mom worked with you?"

Dr. Brooks nodded.

"She was the lead researcher."

Emma's heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

"She discovered the Phoenix Gene."

"But when Ashcroft wanted to weaponize it..."

"...she tried to destroy every record."

"What happened?"

Dr. Brooks closed her eyes.

"He murdered everyone in the laboratory."

Emma whispered,

"My mother survived."

"No."

Dr. Brooks looked at her sadly.

"The woman who raised you wasn't your biological mother."

Emma staggered backward.

"What?"

Jacob reached toward her.

Emma pushed his hand away.

"No!"

"No more lies!"

Dr. Brooks slowly handed Emma another photograph.

A young woman held a newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

Written on the back were five words.

Emma — One Day Old.

The woman smiled at the camera.

Emma had never seen her before.

"Who is she?"

Dr. Brooks answered quietly.

"Your real mother."

Emma's knees buckled.

She stared at the woman's face.

The same green eyes.

The same smile.

The same tiny birthmark beneath the left eyebrow.

Dr. Brooks wiped away a tear.

"She died protecting you."

Emma whispered,

"Then... who raised me?"

Before Dr. Brooks could answer...

The maintenance room door burst open.

Five armed soldiers rushed inside.

Lasers filled the room.

Jacob raised his rifle.

Too late.

A calm voice echoed from behind the soldiers.

"No one move."

Director Ashcroft stepped into the room.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly calm.

He smiled at Emma.

"I've been searching for this laboratory for twenty-eight years."

His eyes moved toward Dr. Brooks.

"Thank you for bringing me back."

Dr. Brooks looked horrified.

"You followed us..."

Ashcroft chuckled.

"No."

"I followed Emma."

He turned back toward her.

"Because there's something you've never been told."

Emma glared at him.

"I'm done believing anything you say."

Ashcroft reached into his coat.

Instead of a weapon...

He produced a small velvet jewelry box.

He opened it.

Inside was a tiny silver bracelet.

The same bracelet from the hospital photograph.

Ashcroft held it out.

"Read the inscription."

Emma slowly took it.

Engraved inside were four words.

Property of Lazarus Division.

Her blood ran cold.

Ashcroft spoke softly.

"You think you escaped Project Lazarus."

"You think they experimented on you."

He shook his head.

"No, Emma."

"You were never their prisoner."

He smiled.

"You were their first success."

The room fell silent.

Then Dr. Brooks whispered six words that shattered Emma completely.

"He's telling the truth... this time."

Emma looked from Ashcroft to Dr. Brooks.

Neither of them looked away.

For the first time since opening the mysterious package...

Emma wondered if the greatest lie had never been about Daniel...

May you like

It had been about herself.
