Chapter 3: The Locker at Pier 17

Emma didn't sleep.
She couldn't.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Daniel kneeling in that chair...
...a gun pressed against his head.
The countdown had already begun.
Midnight.
Pier 17.
Bring the key.
Or lose him forever.
Rain poured over the city as Emma drove through deserted streets.
She checked her rearview mirror every few seconds.
A black SUV followed her.
Always three cars behind.
Never closer.
Never farther away.
When she accelerated...
So did the SUV.
When she turned unexpectedly into a gas station...
The SUV continued straight ahead.
As if it had never been following her.
Emma wasn't convinced.
Someone was watching.
Someone wanted her alive.
At least until midnight.
Pier 17 had been abandoned for nearly twenty years.
Rusted shipping containers stood like forgotten tombstones.
Broken cranes stretched into the fog like giant skeletons.
The ocean crashed violently against the docks.
No security cameras.
No witnesses.
Exactly the kind of place secrets came to die.
Emma parked several blocks away.
She slipped the silver key into her pocket and walked toward Warehouse 9.
Halfway there...
She noticed something carved into a concrete pillar.
A small symbol.
A phoenix rising from flames.
The exact same symbol engraved on the silver key.
Daniel hadn't left her a random key.
He had left her a map.
Inside Warehouse 9...
Hundreds of metal lockers lined the walls.
Each identical.
Each marked only with a number.
Emma looked at the key.
Number 214.
Her heartbeat echoed through the empty building.
She found the locker.
Her hands trembled as she inserted the key.
Click.
The locker door slowly opened.
There was no money.
No jewels.
No weapons.
Only three objects.
A thick red folder.
A passport bearing Daniel's photograph...
...under the name Michael Reeves.
And a tiny black recorder.
Emma pressed PLAY.
Daniel's voice filled the silent warehouse.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I've already failed."
"If you're standing here, never trust anyone carrying a Phoenix badge."
Emma frowned.
Phoenix.
The symbol on the key.
The same symbol carved outside.
What did it mean?
Daniel continued.
"Project Lazarus wasn't created to protect witnesses."
"It was created to erase people."
"They fake deaths."
"They rewrite identities."
"They sell new lives to criminals, politicians... even billionaires."
Emma's blood ran cold.
"There are thousands of people officially dead..."
"...who are still alive."
The recorder crackled.
"And the person running the entire operation..."
"...is someone you've known your whole life."
The recording suddenly stopped.
Battery dead.
"No..."
Emma shook the recorder.
Nothing.
The rest of Daniel's message was gone.
A loud metallic clang echoed somewhere behind her.
Emma spun around.
Nothing.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was inside the warehouse.
She grabbed the red folder and backed away.
Another shadow crossed between the rows of lockers.
"Emma..."
A familiar voice.
Too familiar.
Detective Hale stepped into the light.
His pistol remained lowered.
"I'm not here to hurt you."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"You broke into my apartment."
"You lied to me."
"You knew about the key."
Hale sighed.
"I lied because I didn't have a choice."
He slowly opened his jacket.
Pinned to the inside was a silver badge.
A phoenix.
Exactly like the symbol on the key.
Emma froze.
Hale noticed her expression.
"I know what you're thinking."
"But I'm not your enemy."
Before she could answer...
A laser sight appeared on Hale's chest.
A single red dot.
His eyes widened.
"Get down!"
A gunshot exploded through the warehouse.
Glass shattered.
Hale threw Emma behind a stack of crates.
Bullets ripped through the lockers.
Metal screamed.
Sparks flew everywhere.
"They found us!" Hale shouted.
"Who?"
"The real Phoenix!"
Three masked gunmen stormed through the warehouse.
Military weapons.
Night-vision goggles.
Professional formation.
They weren't here to negotiate.
They were here to erase everyone.
Hale fired twice.
One attacker collapsed.
The other two advanced without hesitation.
Emma crawled toward a side exit.
Suddenly...
One of the gunmen shouted,
"Don't shoot the woman!"
"She's more valuable alive!"
Emma stopped crawling.
Valuable?
Why?
One attacker lunged toward her.
Before he could grab her...
Another shot rang out.
The gunman dropped instantly.
Emma looked toward the rooftop.
A lone sniper stood against the rain.
Face hidden beneath a hood.
The sniper lowered the rifle...
Then signaled for Emma to run.
She didn't hesitate.
She sprinted through the warehouse as bullets shattered concrete around her.
Outside...
A black motorcycle waited with its engine already running.
The mysterious sniper removed the helmet.
Emma's world stopped.
The rider wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Detective Hale.
It was...
Her older brother.
Jacob.
The brother who had supposedly died in Afghanistan twelve years earlier.
Jacob stared at her with exhausted eyes.
"There isn't time to explain."
He handed her another key.
This one was gold.
"They lied to both of us."
Emma could barely speak.
"You..."
"You're dead."
Jacob gave a sad smile.
"So was Daniel."
Sirens echoed in the distance.
Jacob looked toward the warehouse.
"They'll be here in less than two minutes."
Emma's voice trembled.
"Who are they?"
Jacob answered with five words that changed everything.
"The government isn't hunting you."
"They're hunting your bloodline."
Emma stared at him in disbelief.
Jacob started the motorcycle.
"Get on!"
She climbed behind him.
As they sped into the rain...
Emma opened the red folder for the first time.
The first page contained only one sentence.
PROJECT LAZARUS
SUBJECT ZERO: EMMA ELIZABETH CARTER
Her heart stopped.
She wasn't investigating the conspiracy.
She had been the center of it...
May you like
Since the day she was born.
