CHAPTER 2 — THE TRAP INSIDE THE TRAP

Victor watched every movement of my trembling hand.
He believed fear had finally broken me.
He leaned closer.
"Good girl."
I nearly laughed.
Eight years of pretending to be powerless had taught me something priceless.
Cruel people stop looking for danger once they believe they've won.
I signed.
Not my name.
A tiny forensic mark hidden inside one letter.
The same invisible identifier I had used while auditing fraud cases years ago.
Victor never noticed.
But any handwriting expert would.
The document was now legally contaminated.
Worthless in court.
He folded the papers with a satisfied smile.
"See?"
"I knew you'd make the right decision."
I lowered my eyes.
"I've always tried to."
His ego swallowed the lie whole.
An hour later, Victor left for Sterling Capital's headquarters.
He had one final task.
Transfer eighty-two million dollars from my late father's charitable trust into one of his offshore companies.
He believed the forged power of attorney was enough.
He believed the bank manager was loyal.
He believed everyone could be bought.
He was wrong.
Because Mara had already replaced the bank manager three weeks earlier.
The "new executive" approving the transfer...
Was an undercover federal investigator.
Victor smiled as he signed the authorization.
"Everything finally belongs to me."
The investigator smiled back.
"It certainly does."
The transfer completed.
Exactly twelve seconds later...
Every account froze.
Every screen turned red.
ACCESS DENIED.
Victor frowned.
"What the hell?"
His phone rang.
It wasn't me.
It wasn't Mara.
It wasn't his lawyer.
It was the Department of Justice.
Meanwhile...
Back at the mansion...
Evelyn celebrated early.
Champagne.
Jewelry.
Plans for remodeling the house after I "left."
She never noticed the moving trucks outside.
Until strangers began carrying furniture away.
"What are you doing?"
One man calmly handed her an envelope.
"Foreclosure order."
She laughed.
"This house belongs to my son."
The man looked genuinely confused.
"No."
"It belongs to the Clara Harrison Family Trust."
She ripped open the paperwork.
Every signature.
Every ownership document.
Every deed.
Had quietly been transferred years ago...
Before I ever married Victor.
My father had protected me.
He simply never told anyone.
Not even me.
Until his lawyer delivered the final sealed letter after his death.
Victor thought he married wealth.
In reality...
He had never owned a single brick.
Across town...
Television screens interrupted normal programming.
BREAKING NEWS.
Federal investigation into Sterling Capital.
Massive financial fraud.
Money laundering.
Tax evasion.
Forgery.
Investor theft.
Victims across twelve states.
Victor stared at the broadcast.
His own face filled every screen.
Employees slowly stepped away from him.
Security guards surrounded him.
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
"This is impossible!"
"You have no proof!"
The lead investigator smiled.
"Oh..."
"We have thousands of hours."
Victor frowned.
"What cameras?"
The investigator opened a tablet.
Video after video began playing.
Every beating.
Every threat.
Every confession.
Every forged document.
Every conversation inside the mansion.
Victor's face slowly turned white.
Smoke detectors.
Wall clocks.
Picture frames.
Even Evelyn's favorite crystal vase.
For two years...
The entire house had been recording everything.
Not for revenge.
For survival.
As officers led Victor away, he screamed one final sentence.
"Clara did this!"
The investigator answered calmly.
"No."
May you like
"You did."
"And now everyone knows."
