CHAPTER 5: The Grave That Should Have Been Empty

The cemetery was silent.
Just before midnight, Emily stood alone beneath the cold moonlight, staring at the weathered headstone bearing her father's name.
JONATHAN CARTER
Beloved Husband. Devoted Father.
1958–2021.
The words suddenly felt like a cruel joke.
Daniel's warning echoed in her mind.
"Dig up your father's grave alone."
Every instinct told her to walk away.
But after everything she had learned tonight...
She couldn't.
With trembling hands, Emily drove the shovel into the soft earth.
One scoop.
Then another.
Minutes turned into nearly an hour.
Her wedding dress was stained with mud.
Her hands bled through the gloves.
Finally...
The shovel struck wood.
Her heartbeat thundered.
She cleared away the remaining dirt until the coffin was fully exposed.
Taking a deep breath, she pried open the lid.
It creaked slowly.
Emily closed her eyes...
Then looked inside.
She screamed.
The coffin...
Was completely empty.
Not a skeleton.
Not a single bone.
Only a black leather folder resting neatly in the center.
Inside were dozens of classified documents, bank records, and photographs.
The first photo showed her father standing beside a much younger Ryan.
The date in the corner made Emily freeze.
Twenty years ago.
Ryan had been a child.
How could they possibly know each other?
She turned to the next page.
A family portrait.
Her father.
Her mother.
Daniel.
Emily...
And another little boy she had never seen before.
Someone had carefully crossed out the boy's face with red ink.
On the back was one sentence.
"The wrong child survived."
Emily's blood ran cold.
Before she could read another page...
A car engine echoed through the cemetery.
Headlights flooded the graves.
Three black SUVs surrounded her from every direction.
Armed men stepped out.
None wore uniforms.
Their leader slowly removed his sunglasses despite the darkness.
He smiled.
"We've been waiting for you, Miss Carter."
Emily grabbed the folder and ran.
Gunshots exploded behind her.
Bullets shattered old gravestones.
She sprinted through the maze of monuments until she reached the cemetery gate—
Only to stop dead in her tracks.
Daniel stood there.
Holding a pistol.
Pointed directly at her.
His expression was empty.
Cold.
Nothing like the brother she remembered.
Then he spoke the words she never imagined hearing.
"Give me the folder... or I'll finish what Dad started."
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
"What... did you just say?"
Daniel's finger tightened on the trigger.
"I'm sorry, Emily."
May you like
"You were never supposed to live this long."
