CHAPTER 2 â "The Secret Beneficiary"

Three days later, Grant received an anonymous message.
Meet me alone.
I know how to get everything back.
The sender was Vanessa.
His own sister.
Inside a private Beverly Hills restaurant, Vanessa slid the flash drive across the table.
"I found something."
Grant opened the file.
His heartbeat accelerated.
One document.
One signature.
One name.
PRIMARY SUCCESSOR BENEFICIARY
Grant smiled.
"I knew it."
"I'm in the Trust."
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
"No."
Grant looked again.
His smile disappeared.
The beneficiary wasn't him.
It wasn't Claire.
It wasn't Marianne.
It wasn't anyone named Hartwell.
Instead...
The document listed a woman neither of them recognized.
Emily Rowan.
Age: 26.
Grant frowned.
"Who the hell is Emily Rowan?"
Vanessa whispered,
"I've spent three days trying to figure that out."
"She doesn't work for Claire."
"She's not related."
"She isn't listed anywhere."
"So why would someone inherit nearly half a billion dollars?"
Grant's mind raced.
"There has to be an affair."
"She's hiding someone."
Vanessa nodded.
"If the media believed Claire had a secret lover..."
"...the board."
"...the charities."
"...the investors."
"...everyone would question her."
Grant smiled for the first time.
"We destroy her reputation."
Forty-eight hours later...
The headlines exploded.
BILLIONAIRE CEO HIDES MYSTERY WOMAN IN $420M TRUST
SECRET BENEFICIARY EXPOSED
WHO IS EMILY ROWAN?
News helicopters circled the mansion.
Reporters flooded the gates.
Social media erupted.
Grant watched everything unfold from his hotel suite.
Finally...
Claire would be humiliated.
Exactly as he had planned.
Then his phone rang.
Marianne again.
She sounded almost amused.
"You should turn on Channel Seven."
Grant switched channels.
Claire stood behind a podium.
Perfectly calm.
"No comments regarding today's rumors."
"But..."
"There is one misunderstanding I'd like to correct."
She looked directly into the cameras.
"Emily Rowan is not my lover."
"She's my daughter."
The world froze.
Grant nearly dropped the remote.
"...What?"
Claire continued.
"Twenty-six years ago..."
"I gave birth while attending MIT."
"I placed my daughter into a private guardianship because I was nineteen, homeless, and building a future I couldn't yet provide."
"My daughter has known the truth for years."
"She has lived privately because she chose privacy."
"The Trust exists for her."
Grant couldn't breathe.
He whispered,
"You had a child..."
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"No."
"I have a family."
"I simply made sure predators never found her."
Then she smiled.
"And now..."
"They have."
By evening...
Emily Rowan appeared beside Claire for the first time.
Confident.
Brilliant.
Calm.
She looked astonishingly like Claire.
Within hours...
Public opinion completely reversed.
Instead of scandal...
America saw sacrifice.
Instead of deception...
They saw a mother protecting her child.
Grant watched every news anchor praise Claire's strength.
He realized something horrifying.
He hadn't damaged her.
He had introduced her daughter to the world...
May you like
Exactly when Claire wanted it to happen.
