Chapter 4 - Midnight at the Obsidian Vault

Night fell fast over the rugged mountain passes of Montana. Rain began to slick the dark asphalt, reflection the truck's headlights like broken mirrors.

Silas pulled the F-350 into a hidden gravel turn-off high up in the Blackwood Ridge. The black stallion walked behind them, its dark coat dripping with rain, its breath forming thick white clouds in the freezing night air.

Silas turned off the engine and killed the lights. He turned to Lily, taking a deep breath.

"Alright kid," Silas said, rubbing his tired eyes. "You need to talk. Who are you really? And why was that monster horse acting like a trained golden retriever around you?"

Lily pulled a small, tarnished silver locket from inside her dirty dress. She popped it open. Inside was a tiny photograph of a handsome man with warm eyes, standing next to a younger version of the black stallion. Beside them stood a woman holding a baby.

"My mother died when I was born," Lily whispered. "My father was Marcus Sterling. He knew his company was filled with dangerous men. He knew Julian was stealing money to fund illegal military contract networks. So my father built Ares."

"Built?" Silas asked, confused.

"Ares isn't just a horse, Mr. Vance," Lily said, turning her head to look at the animal standing guard outside the truck window. "He was surgically implanted with an encrypted micro-hard drive underneath his shoulder blade when he was a foal. The drive contains the master passwords to my father’s entire private financial network... and the video evidence of Julian sabotaging my family's estate."

Silas felt a chill run down his spine. The stallion wasn't just a high-value animal. It was a walking, living vault containing thirty billion dollars and a murder conviction.

"That's why Julian spent four years hunting this horse," Silas realized, the puzzle pieces falling violently into place. "He didn't want the horse. He wanted to kill it and extract the drive!"

"And he wanted me dead," Lily added softly, "because the drive is locked with biometric encryption. It requires two things to open: the chip inside Ares... and my DNA."

Suddenly, a red laser sight dotted through the rear windshield of the truck, resting right on the back of Silas’s neck.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the darkness outside the driver's side door.

"End of the line, Vance," a voice rasped.
