CHAPTER 3: THE RECORDING CHANGED EVERYTHING… AND EXPOSED THE MAN AT THE DOOR

The stranger's confidence vanished.

His eyes locked onto the tiny voice recorder in Richard's hand.

"No..." he muttered.

"That should have been destroyed."

Richard pressed the PLAY button.

Static crackled through the living room.

Then Emma's trembling voice filled the house.

"Dad... if you're hearing this, I probably ran out of time."

Everyone froze.

Even the man standing outside the window.

"They've been following me for months. They don't want Noah... they want what Noah inherited."

Richard frowned.

Inherited?

Emma continued.

"The day Noah's father died, he secretly transferred everything he owned into Noah's name. His family doesn't know I have proof."

The room fell silent.

Billions of dollars.

Luxury hotels.

Private islands.

Investment companies.

Everything legally belonged...

To the frightened seven-year-old standing behind Richard.

Noah looked confused.

"I don't understand..."

Richard knelt beside him.

"You don't have to."

"I'll protect you."

Outside, the stranger's phone suddenly rang.

He answered immediately.

"Yes, sir..."

He listened for several seconds before his face turned pale.

"They found the recording."

"I understand."

He hung up.

Then, without another word...

He walked back to the SUV.

The vehicle disappeared into the rain.

Evelyn finally breathed again.

"It's over..."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"It's only beginning."

Just then...

A police cruiser pulled into the driveway.

Two officers stepped out.

Richard rushed toward them with the recording.

"Thank God you're here."

But instead of asking questions...

One officer quietly placed his hand on his holster.

"Richard Carter?"

"You're under arrest for the kidnapping of Noah Bennett."

Richard stared in disbelief.

"What are you talking about?"

The second officer unfolded an official warrant.

According to the report...

Emma was dead.

And Richard had allegedly abducted her only child.

Evelyn screamed.

"That's impossible!"

The officers entered the house.

Noah clung desperately to Richard's leg.

"Grandpa... don't let them take me..."

Richard's heart broke.

He knew someone powerful had reached the police before he could.

As one officer reached for Noah...

A loud voice echoed from the driveway.

"Nobody touches that child."

Every head turned.

A black military helicopter thundered overhead before landing in the empty field beside the house.

A woman in a dark suit stepped out, flanked by armed security officers.

She held up a leather badge.

"I'm Special Agent Sarah Collins."

"We've been investigating this family for eighteen months."

She looked directly at Richard.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Your daughter isn't dead."

Richard stopped breathing.

Sarah took a deep breath before delivering the words no one expected.

"Emma is alive..."

"...but she's being held somewhere they never wanted anyone to find."

Noah burst into tears.

"Mommy..."

Sarah knelt beside him and gently took his hand.

"We're going to bring her home."

But before anyone could speak again...

Sarah's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression instantly changed.

Then she whispered only four terrifying words.

May you like

"They've moved Emma again."
