CHAPTER 4: THEY SAID EMMA WAS ALIVE… BUT THE TRUTH INSIDE THE ABANDONED HOSPITAL WAS FAR MORE TERRIFYING

The helicopter lifted into the storm before sunrise.

Richard sat beside Noah, gripping the little boy's hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.

No one spoke.

Special Agent Sarah Collins stared at the tablet on her lap.

A blinking red dot flashed across the screen.

"We traced Emma's emergency phone," she said quietly.

"It was activated for exactly eleven seconds."

Richard leaned forward.

"Where?"

Sarah hesitated.

"An abandoned psychiatric hospital."

The cabin fell silent.

"That's impossible," Evelyn whispered.

"They closed that place twenty years ago."

Sarah nodded.

"Officially."

"But someone has been using it."

Forty minutes later, the helicopter landed outside the crumbling building.

Broken windows.

Rusted gates.

Weeds growing through cracked concrete.

It looked abandoned...

Yet fresh tire tracks covered the muddy road.

"They're here," Sarah said.

Her team quietly surrounded the building.

Richard refused to stay behind.

"My daughter is inside."

Sarah looked into his eyes.

Then handed him a bulletproof vest.

"Stay behind me."

The front doors creaked open.

Inside...

The air smelled of dust and bleach.

Wheelchairs lay overturned.

Medical files were scattered across the floor.

Noah suddenly stopped walking.

He pointed toward a hallway.

"I know this place."

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The boy's face turned pale.

"I've been here before."

"My mommy told me never to tell anyone."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"How many times?"

Noah looked down.

"I don't know..."

"I used to wake up here."

Richard felt sick.

Emma hadn't been hiding from these people.

They had been holding her...

And Noah.

Suddenly—

A loud metallic bang echoed through the building.

One of Sarah's agents shouted.

"Movement! East corridor!"

The team sprinted forward.

A shadow disappeared around the corner.

Sarah chased it.

Richard followed despite her orders.

The chase ended at an old operating room.

The door was still swinging open.

Inside...

No one.

Only a hospital bed.

Leather restraints.

An IV stand.

And a single silver necklace lying on the pillow.

Evelyn gasped.

She recognized it instantly.

"That's Emma's..."

Richard picked it up.

His hands trembled.

She had worn it every day since she was sixteen.

She would never have taken it off willingly.

Then Noah quietly whispered...

"Mommy was crying here."

Everyone froze.

Sarah slowly turned toward the child.

"What did you say?"

Noah pointed to the wall.

"She scratched something..."

Sarah shined her flashlight across the cracked paint.

At first...

Nothing.

Then...

Tiny letters carved into the concrete.

RICHARD... DON'T TRUST THE FBI.

Sarah stared at the message in disbelief.

Her own agents looked at one another.

Richard stepped backward.

"What is this?"

Before Sarah could answer...

Every light inside the hospital suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the building.

Then the emergency speakers crackled to life.

A calm male voice echoed through every hallway.

"Welcome back, Richard Carter."

"You finally came."

"But you're already too late."

A massive explosion rocked the basement.

The floor beneath them shook violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Sarah screamed,

"Everyone out! NOW!"

But before anyone reached the exit...

Heavy steel security doors slammed shut around the entire floor.

They were trapped.

Then, through the darkness, Noah looked toward the far end of the hallway.

His eyes filled with tears.

He smiled.

"Mommy..."

A woman was standing there.

Barefoot.

Thin.

Wearing a torn hospital gown.

She slowly raised her head.

Richard's heart stopped.

It was Emma.

But as she stepped into the dim emergency light...

He realized something was horribly wrong.

She looked at him...

As if she had never seen him before.
