CHAPTER 1 "The Night the Carter Empire Chose the Wrong Enemy."

The laughter inside the Carter mansion did not stop the moment Amelia stepped into the Rolls-Royce.

It followed her.

She could still hear Charlotte's mocking voice echoing from the marble staircase.

"Finally," Charlotte laughed. "The gold digger knows her place."

Margaret Carter raised her champagne glass.

"To new beginnings."

The ballroom erupted with applause.

Inside the Rolls-Royce, however...

No one spoke.

The elderly driver shut the door with absolute respect.

"Welcome home, Young Mistress."

Amelia slowly pressed the tissue against her bleeding hand.

Only then did the pain begin.

Not because Ethan had slapped away her dignity.

Not because Margaret had accused her of theft.

But because after three years...

She finally understood she had loved a man who had never truly known who she was.

Across from her sat another passenger.

An elegant man in his sixties wearing silver-rimmed glasses.

Victor Hayes.

The Carter family's chief legal adviser.

Or at least...

He used to be.

He bowed slightly.

"Everything has been prepared."

Amelia looked out the window.

"The board?"

"They're waiting."

"The banks?"

"Frozen."

"The overseas accounts?"

"Already locked."

Victor handed her a leather folder.

Inside were hundreds of documents.

Stock certificates.

Property deeds.

Corporate trusts.

Holding companies.

Every company Ethan proudly called "his."

Every luxury hotel.

Every Carter skyscraper.

Every private investment fund.

Every signature...

Carried Amelia's name.

Years earlier...

When Ethan's father nearly lost the Carter empire during an international fraud investigation...

Only one family had been willing to save them.

The Blackwood family.

Old money.

Invisible wealth.

Owners of investment groups that never appeared in Forbes rankings.

Amelia Blackwood.

The youngest daughter.

Her grandfather had agreed to rescue the Carters.

But under one condition.

Everything would legally belong to Amelia until Ethan proved himself worthy of inheriting it.

The Carters never knew.

Margaret believed the contracts were temporary paperwork.

Ethan never bothered reading what he signed.

He trusted his mother.

His greatest mistake.

Victor looked up.

"The emergency board meeting begins in forty-two minutes."

Amelia nodded quietly.

"No announcements yet."

Victor hesitated.

"You still want to give Ethan one last chance?"

Amelia closed the folder.

"No."

"I gave him three years."

Outside...

Back at the mansion...

Ethan finally stopped laughing.

His phone vibrated.

One notification.

Then another.

Then dozens.

ACCOUNT FROZEN.

WIRE TRANSFER DENIED.

EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.

Charlotte frowned.

"What is it?"

Ethan ignored her.

He dialed his bank manager.

No answer.

He called another.

No answer.

Then...

His personal CFO called first.

"Ethan..."

His voice shook.

"We have a problem."

Every guest suddenly fell silent.

"What happened?"

"The company accounts..."

"...they no longer belong to Carter Holdings."

Silence.

"They belong to..."

The CFO swallowed.

"...Amelia Blackwood."

The champagne glass slipped from Margaret's hand.

It shattered across the marble.

For the second time that night...

Broken glass covered the Carter mansion.

May you like

This time...

No one laughed.
