Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the StudyClaire stepped out of the hallway into the sweeping, dimly lit corridor just as a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal bespoke suit walked past.

Dante Rinaldi.

Even in motion, he looked like a predator who owned the room, the hallway, and probably the entire county of Fairfield. Jet-black hair brushed with silver at the temples, high cheekbones carved from granite, and cold, calculating eyes that looked as though they hadn't seen a genuine smile in a decade. He was the kind of handsome that terrified people.

He stopped mid-stride. His gaze snapped toward Claire, locking onto her with a weight that felt physical.

"You're still here," he stated. It wasn't a question. It sounded like an observation of a strange anomaly in a scientific experiment.

"I am," Claire said, holding her ground, refusing to shrink back under his intimidating scrutiny. "And your sons are currently in bed, though the room smelled like maple syrup and chaos for three hours."

Dante’s jaw tightened. A muscle jumped in his cheek. He stepped closer, towering over her by a foot, the scent of expensive cologne, rain, and old iron washing over her.

"Mr. Brandt failed to brief you properly," Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly hum that vibrated in the quiet air. "This is not a boarding school. My sons are… difficult. They drive people away for a reason. Pack your things. Brandt will cut you a check for two days' labor, plus travel expenses."

Claire felt a sharp spike of pure, unadulterated panic. Eleven dollars and forty-three cents. The eviction notice. Rosie.

She didn't back down. Instead, she stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she was close enough to see the tiny silver flecks in his dark eyes.

"Twenty-two women left," Claire said, her voice steady, laced with quiet steel. "You’re looking for someone weak so you can prove to yourself that nobody can handle your family. Well, Mr. Rinaldi? I’ve survived worse than three spoiled boys with a pancake fetish. I’m staying."

Dante stared at her. For three agonizing seconds, the hallway was completely dead silent. The air grew thick, charged with a dangerous, unspoken tension.

"You don't know what you're stepping into, Ms. Beaumont," Dante whispered, his voice dropping to a lethal murmur. "There are enemies who watch this house. There are shadows in my world that will chew you up and spit you out before you can blink. Leave now while you still have your life intact."

"Keep your mafia riddles to yourself," Claire snapped, her exhaustion finally breaking through her professional filter. "Pay me the six grand, let me do my job, and I won't ask questions about why a billionaire lawyer needs armed guards at his gates."

Dante froze. His eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. No one spoke to him like that. Not his capos, not his business partners, not even rival syndicate bosses.

Instead of shouting, a terrifying, humorless smirk touched the corner of his mouth.

"Very well, Ms. Beaumont," Dante murmured softly, leaning down just enough so his words brushed her ear. "Let's see how long you survive the night."
