PART 3 — THE SECRET WORTH MILLIONS

For nearly thirty seconds, no one spoke.
The only sound inside the Salazar mansion was the recording still playing on the tablet.
Mariana's scream.
Adrián's cold voice.
Beatriz's laughter.
Every second echoed through the kitchen like a final judgment.
Officer Lucía Hernández paused the video.
"You still want to tell us she burned herself?"
Adrián swallowed hard.
His confident smile had disappeared.
"You don't understand," he muttered. "She provoked me."
The words barely left his mouth before Lucía shook her head.
"No one provokes attempted violence."
Two officers stepped forward and placed Adrián in handcuffs.
The sharp click of metal echoed through the room.
For the first time in years, Mariana watched someone else lose control instead of her.
"This is ridiculous!" Beatriz shouted. "Do you know who my family is?"
Natalia Torres calmly opened another folder.
"We do."
"That's exactly why we've been investigating for months."
Beatriz's face lost all color.
"What do you mean... months?"
Natalia slid several photographs across the kitchen island.
Copies of forged contracts.
Fraudulent invoices.
Offshore transfers.
Construction permits signed with Mariana's digital signature.
The older woman's hands began trembling.
"Where did you get these?"
Mariana answered quietly.
"From the company I helped build."
Nobody looked at her.
Until now.
Ramiro stared as if seeing his daughter-in-law for the first time.
"You... copied company records?"
Mariana met his gaze.
"I created the system that stored them."
Ramiro's expression changed from anger to disbelief.
Adrián had always taken credit for the software that transformed Salazar Constructora into one of the fastest-growing companies in Querétaro.
Business magazines had praised his "vision."
Investors called him a genius.
The truth had been standing in his kitchen every day, cooking meals and hiding bruises beneath long sleeves.
"I wrote every line of code," Mariana said.
"I also built the backup system."
Adrián's breathing became uneven.
"The servers..."
Mariana nodded.
"They never belonged to you."
A silence heavier than stone filled the room.
Natalia turned another page.
"Our forensic accountants verified over two hundred suspicious transactions."
She looked directly at Adrián.
"Millions of pesos disappeared through shell companies."
"I didn't—"
"You signed them."
"I was told they were legal!"
Natalia's eyes narrowed.
"Were you?"
Before Adrián could answer, a detective entered the kitchen carrying a laptop recovered from the upstairs office.
"We found encrypted accounting files."
Mariana smiled faintly.
"They won't need the laptop."
Everyone looked at her.
"The files were copied automatically every night."
"To where?" Lucía asked.
"A secure cloud account."
Adrián suddenly lunged forward despite the handcuffs.
"You told me those backups were deleted!"
"I lied."
He stopped struggling.
His shoulders slowly collapsed.
The realization finally hit him.
Nothing had been erased.
Nothing had been hidden.
Everything still existed.
Every fake contract.
Every stolen payment.
Every forged signature.
Every crime.
Just then, Natalia's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What is it?" Lucía asked.
Natalia didn't answer immediately.
She stepped away before speaking quietly.
"The financial crimes unit just executed search warrants."
"Already?"
"They found far more than we expected."
She lowered her voice even further.
"The Salazar company wasn't working alone."
Lucía frowned.
"How many people are involved?"
Natalia looked back toward Adrián.
"Enough to make this much bigger than domestic violence."
At that exact moment, Adrián's own phone began ringing inside an evidence bag.
The caller ID displayed only one word.
EL PATRÓN
Every officer in the room noticed it.
Adrián's face drained of color.
He whispered almost to himself,
"No..."
The phone continued vibrating.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Natalia exchanged a glance with Lucía.
"Don't answer it," Lucía said.
Adrián shook his head frantically.
"If I don't..."
He stopped speaking.
"If you don't what?" Natalia asked.
His lips trembled.
"They'll know something went wrong."
"Who will?"
Adrián looked toward Mariana.
For the first time since they married...
She saw genuine fear in his eyes.
Not fear of prison.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of someone else.
Someone powerful enough to terrify the man who had terrorized everyone around him.
Outside, investigators continued carrying boxes of evidence from the mansion.
Television reporters began arriving at the end of the street after hearing police radio traffic.
Neighbors peeked through curtains, unable to believe the perfect Salazar family had become the center of a criminal investigation.
Mariana watched silently as paramedics carefully wrapped her burned hand.
She should have felt relief.
Instead, an uneasy feeling settled in her chest.
Because she remembered something Adrián had once said during a late-night phone call he thought she couldn't hear.
"If they ever find out... we're all dead."
At the time, she believed he was exaggerating.
Now...
Looking at the terror on his face as the phone labeled EL PATRÓN rang for the seventh time...
She realized he hadn't been talking about prison.
He had been talking about someone who never left witnesses behind.
And before dawn...
May you like
That person would learn that Mariana Salazar was still alive.
