PART 4 — THE HUNTER IN THE SHADOWS

The phone stopped ringing.
Silence settled over the kitchen.
No one moved.
Then...
It rang again.
The screen still displayed the same two words.
EL PATRÓN
Adrián's breathing became shallow.
Officer Lucía Hernández picked up the evidence bag and looked at him.
"You seem more afraid of this caller than of being arrested."
Adrián didn't answer.
His eyes never left the phone.
Natalia noticed the change in his expression.
It wasn't the fear of a guilty man.
It was the fear of someone who knew exactly what happened to people who failed.
The call finally ended.
Seconds later, a text message appeared.
Answer. Now.
Another followed almost immediately.
Where are the files?
Then another.
Why are you surrounded by police?
Lucía looked at Natalia.
"He already knows."
Natalia nodded.
"Someone inside the company warned him."
Outside the mansion, detectives continued loading boxes of evidence into unmarked vehicles.
Financial records.
Hard drives.
Contracts.
Mobile phones.
Everything was carefully labeled.
Across the street, neighbors gathered behind fences, whispering in disbelief.
The Salazar family had spent years pretending to be the model family of Juriquilla.
Now flashing police lights reflected across the same windows where Christmas photos had once been taken.
Mariana watched through the ambulance door while a nurse carefully treated her burned hand.
The pain was intense.
But something else hurt even more.
For two years...
Hundreds of people had smiled at her.
Not one had asked why she always wore long sleeves.
Not one had questioned the bruises.
Not one had wondered why she was never allowed to drive herself anywhere.
She realized how easy it was for abuse to hide behind wealth.
Inside the house, detectives searched Adrián's office.
One officer pulled a framed family portrait from the wall.
Behind it...
A hidden safe.
Ramiro immediately stepped forward.
"That's private property."
The detective ignored him.
Within minutes, the safe was open.
Bundles of cash.
Luxury watches.
Passports.
And a black notebook.
Natalia carefully opened it.
Every page contained handwritten initials.
Dates.
Amounts.
Cities.
Next to several entries was the same symbol.
A small blue triangle.
"What is this?" Lucía asked.
Adrián looked away.
"I don't know."
Natalia smiled slightly.
"You've been lying all night."
She flipped another page.
There, folded between two sheets, was a photograph.
It showed Adrián standing beside three men at a private ranch.
One of them had his face crossed out with black ink.
Another had been burned with a cigarette.
Only one face remained untouched.
The man standing in the center.
Older.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Cold eyes.
No smile.
On the back of the photograph someone had written only one sentence.
He decides who disappears.
Even the detectives fell silent.
At police headquarters, digital forensic analysts continued examining Mariana's encrypted backup.
The progress bar slowly reached one hundred percent.
A young analyst opened the final folder.
His eyes widened.
"This can't be right."
His supervisor hurried over.
"What did you find?"
The analyst turned the monitor.
"It isn't just accounting records."
There were hundreds of videos.
Secret recordings.
Hidden photographs.
Audio files.
Scanned contracts.
GPS logs.
Every file had been organized by date.
By person.
By location.
Mariana hadn't simply gathered evidence against her husband.
She had unknowingly documented an entire criminal network.
The supervisor immediately picked up the phone.
"Call the prosecutor."
"No..."
"Call everyone."
Back at the mansion, Adrián sat handcuffed in the back of a patrol vehicle.
His phone buzzed once more.
Although locked inside the evidence bag, the preview of the newest message appeared on the screen.
You talked.
Another message arrived.
Everyone pays for betrayal.
Adrián suddenly began shouting.
"You have to protect me!"
The officers exchanged confused looks.
"I'll testify!"
"I'll tell you everything!"
"I'll give you names!"
Lucía stepped closer.
"An hour ago you claimed you were innocent."
"I changed my mind!"
"What changed?"
Adrián looked toward the dark hills beyond the neighborhood.
His voice became almost a whisper.
"You don't understand."
"They don't forgive mistakes."
Natalia leaned forward.
"Who are 'they'?"
Before Adrián could answer...
A deafening explosion echoed from the far end of the street.
Every officer instinctively turned.
A black luxury SUV parked nearly two hundred meters away erupted into flames.
Windows shattered.
A fireball climbed into the night sky.
Neighbors screamed.
Police rushed toward the explosion.
Within seconds, officers secured the area.
Fortunately, the vehicle had been empty.
No injuries.
But taped to the inside of the shattered windshield was a single white envelope.
Bomb technicians carefully recovered it.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
No fingerprints.
No signature.
Only a short message typed in black ink.
THIS IS YOUR FIRST WARNING.
Officer Lucía read it twice.
Then handed it to Natalia.
Neither woman spoke.
Because they both understood the message wasn't meant for the police.
It was meant for Mariana.
Someone had been watching the mansion all night.
Someone knew the investigation had begun.
And someone powerful enough to stage an explosion in front of dozens of officers had just announced that the real hunt was only beginning.
As the flames lit up the night sky, Mariana looked through the ambulance window and felt a chill run through her body.
For the first time since pressing the hidden button beneath the kitchen island...
She realized escaping Adrián had never been the final battle.
May you like
It had only opened the door to a far more dangerous enemy.
