CHAPTER 1 – The Wire Beneath the Mud

Every fisherman has a story.

Most involve giant fish, storms, or the one that got away.

But what happened to Daniel Harper one rainy Saturday morning would become something far stranger—something that would soon attract police officers, historians, divers, reporters... and people who wished the discovery had never been made.

It all began with a single rusty wire.

The shoreline was almost deserted.

The violent storm that had battered the coast the previous night had finally passed, leaving behind a gray silence broken only by crashing waves.

Daniel Harper, a fifty-four-year-old fisherman from the small coastal town of Grayhaven, adjusted his waterproof jacket and carried his fishing rod toward his favorite isolated cove.

He loved this place because nobody else came here.

No tourists.

No noisy boats.

Just the sound of the ocean.

The beach, however, looked completely different after the storm.

Seaweed was piled everywhere.

Broken wooden planks floated in shallow pools.

Plastic containers, tangled fishing nets, twisted metal, and driftwood covered the wet sand.

Daniel carefully stepped through the sticky mud, searching for solid ground.

That's when he noticed it.

A thin steel wire sticking straight out of the earth.

Only about eight inches were visible.

At first, he ignored it.

Storms always uncovered strange junk.

But after taking several steps away, something made him stop.

The wire wasn't lying randomly.

It stood perfectly vertical.

Almost as if someone had buried whatever it was attached to...

...on purpose.

Daniel slowly walked back.

He grabbed the wire with one hand.

He tugged.

Nothing.

Not even the slightest movement.

Curiosity replaced caution.

He wrapped both hands around it and leaned backward with all his weight.

Still nothing.

"What on earth is this?" he whispered.

The mud around his boots began sucking them downward.

He planted his feet deeper and pulled again.

The wire sliced through his thick gloves.

His shoulders burned.

Several times he nearly lost his balance.

The object underneath refused to move.

Most people would have walked away.

Daniel couldn't.

Something about the resistance felt...

unnatural.

He found a broken piece of driftwood and used it as a lever.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

The earth began to tremble.

A deep sucking sound echoed beneath the mud.

The hidden object shifted.

Just an inch.

Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.

Whatever he had found...

...was incredibly heavy.

He rocked it left and right.

Again.

And again.

Then suddenly—

SCHLOOP!

The mud released its grip.

Daniel stumbled backward as a massive object burst from the ground.

He barely caught it before it splashed back into the sludge.

His breathing became rapid.

The thing was roughly the size of a large backpack.

Completely covered in thick black mud.

Its shape made no sense.

Rounded on one side.

Sharp on the other.

Heavy enough that it took all his strength just to carry it.

For one horrifying second...

Daniel imagined the worst.

"Please don't be..."

He couldn't even finish the sentence.

With trembling hands, he dragged the object toward the water.

Cold waves washed across it.

The mud slowly began sliding away.

He rubbed the surface carefully.

More dirt disappeared.

Then...

Metal.

Dark gray metal.

Smooth.

Curved.

Not rusted like ordinary scrap.

His breathing stopped.

He washed away another layer.

A thick circular piece appeared.

Then strange glass.

Then several brass fittings.

Finally...

Daniel froze.

His entire body went numb.

He wasn't holding an old engine.

He wasn't holding fishing equipment.

He wasn't holding military junk.

He was staring directly into the cracked glass face of an antique deep-sea diving helmet.

One that looked almost a century old.

But something inside the helmet made his blood run cold.

Through the dirty glass...

He thought he saw...

human teeth.

Daniel dropped the helmet into the shallow surf and stumbled backward in absolute terror.

Then...

The helmet blinked.

Or at least...

May you like

He could have sworn it did.
