Chapter 5 - The Trial of Whispers and Blood

They hid Jolene in a private, state-of-the-art medical clinic located in a secluded, wooded estate near Galveston. The facility was owned by a retired surgeon who owed his life—and his career—to Barrett Cade.

For three days, Tessa didn't sleep. She monitored Jolene’s vitals, administered medications, and watched the news.

The media was in a frenzy.

Wesley Prescott had held a press conference, tearfully announcing that his pregnant wife had been kidnapped from her hospital bed by her "dangerous, cartel-affiliated brother." The police had issued an active warrant for Barrett Cade's arrest.

But Barrett remained calm. He spent his hours in the study of the estate, making calls, reviewing financial documents, and waiting.

On the fourth night, Jolene’s monitors began to beep frantically.

Tessa rushed to the bedside. Jolene’s eyes were flickering. Her fingers, which had been clenched tightly for days, began to relax.

"Barrett!" Tessa called out.

Barrett entered the room instantly, his cold facade cracking as he rushed to his sister’s side.

Jolene’s eyes slowly opened. She looked around the unfamiliar room, her gaze finally landing on her brother.

"Barrett..." she whispered, her voice dry and cracked.

"I’m here, Jo-Jo," Barrett said, taking her hand. "You’re safe. The baby is safe."

Jolene’s eyes filled with tears. She tried to sit up, but Tessa gently held her down. "Don't move, Jolene. You’ve been through a lot of trauma."

"Wesley..." Jolene whispered, a look of pure terror crossing her face. "He... he found out."

"Found out what, sweetheart?" Barrett asked.

"The ledger," Jolene sobbed. "I found his offshore accounts. He wasn't just laundering money for his clients, Barrett. He’s been working with the Cruz cartel. They’re planning to take over your shipping docks. Wesley was paid five million dollars to build a legal case to freeze your assets so the Cruz family could move in. When I told him I was going to tell you... he grabbed me. He said he would kill me and make it look like an accident."

Barrett’s face went entirely still. The silence in the room was louder than any gunshot.

The betrayal was complete. Wesley wasn't just a husband who had abused his wife; he was a traitor who had aligned with Barrett’s deadliest enemies to destroy everything his family had built.

Suddenly, the lights in the estate flickered.
