Chapter 4 - The Safe House Breach

The rain finally hit Houston at 9:00 p.m., turning the city into a blur of neon lights and slick asphalt. Inside a secure, unmarked safe house owned by the Cade family on the outskirts of the city, Tessa Morrow sat at a wooden table, her hands wrapped around a mug of lukewarm coffee.
Paul Greer stood by the window, his eyes fixed on the rain-swept street outside. Marcus was in the adjacent room, analyzing the encrypted drive they had taken from Dr. Vance.
"How long do I have to stay here?" Tessa asked, her voice tight with exhaustion.
"Until Barrett says it's safe," Paul replied without turning around. "Wesley Prescott doesn't leave witnesses, Nurse Morrow. You threw a wrench into his perfect machine. Right now, you’re the most dangerous person in Houston to him."
Suddenly, Marcus walked into the room, his face pale. "Paul. Look at this."
He placed a laptop on the table. The screen displayed the decrypted medical files of Dr. Vance. But it wasn't just Jolene’s files. It was an automated log of every medication administered to her over the last twelve hours.
Tessa leaned forward, her medical training taking over. Her eyes scanned the chemical names and dosages. Suddenly, her breath caught in her throat.
"Oh my god," Tessa whispered, dropping her coffee mug. It shattered against the floor.
"What is it?" Paul demanded, stepping away from the window.
"They’re killing her," Tessa said, her voice shaking violently. "Look at the dosage of Vecuronium bromide. It’s a paralytic agent. They’re administering it under the guise of keeping her sedated to prevent brain swelling. But the dosage is twice what it should be for a pregnant woman. It’s slowly suppressing her respiratory drive and starving the baby’s brain of oxygen. It looks like natural complications from the coma... but it’s a slow execution."
Paul’s jaw tightened. "Wesley is murdering his own wife and child in broad daylight."
"If they keep her on this dose for another twelve hours, the fetus will suffer irreversible brain death, and Jolene will follow," Tessa said, standing up. "We have to get her out of that hospital. Now!"
Before Paul could answer, the security monitors on the wall flashed red.
The external cameras showed three dark SUVs pulling up onto the lawn outside, their headlights cut. Men in tactical gear, carrying suppressed automatic weapons, spilled out of the vehicles.
"Breach!" Marcus yelled, drawing his weapon from his shoulder holster. "They found us!"
"Get the girl to the basement!" Paul roared, drawing his own gun and kicking the wooden table over to create a barricade.
The front windows shattered into a million pieces as a barrage of gunfire tore through the living room. The deafening roar of automatic weapons filled the safe house. Tessa screamed, dropping to the floor as drywall and glass rained down upon her hair.
Marcus grabbed her by the collar of her jacket, dragging her toward the heavy steel door that led to the storm cellar. "Move, move, move!"
Outside the door, Paul was returning fire, his weapon barking in the dark as the tactical team breached the front entrance. Wesley hadn't sent street thugs; he had hired a private corporate security firm—ex-military mercenaries who moved with lethal precision.
Marcus shoved Tessa down the dark concrete stairs of the basement. "Stay down here! Don't open this door for anyone except me or Paul!"
He slammed the steel door shut, and the sound of the heavy deadbolt clicking into place echoed in the darkness.
Tessa collapsed against the cold concrete floor, covering her ears as the sounds of gunfire and screaming reverberated through the floorboards above her. The vibrations shook the dust from the ceiling. She was trapped in the dark, surrounded by a war she had never asked to be a part of.
“Think, Tessa, think,” she told herself, her mother’s face flashing in her mind again. “You didn't run away then. Don't freeze now.”
She pulled out her phone. There was no cellular signal in the reinforced concrete basement. But she noticed the phone was picking up a faint, unsecured Wi-Fi network from the adjacent property.
With trembling fingers, she connected to the network and opened her secure email app. She attached the scanned images of her private notebook and the screenshot of the lethal medication log Marcus had pulled from the drive.
She sent it to a single recipient: Barrett Cade.
Above the ceiling, the gunfire suddenly stopped.
A heavy, terrifying silence fell over the house. Tessa held her breath, her heart ticking like a time bomb.
Slowly, she heard heavy footsteps approaching the steel basement door from above. Thump. Thump. Thump.
Someone was standing on the other side.
The handle of the door jiggled violently. Then, the sound of a mechanical grinder sparked against the lock. They were cutting through the steel.
Tessa backed away into the deepest corner of the basement, her eyes wide with terror as the sparks began to fly through the door frame. She looked around frantically for a weapon, her fingers wrapping around a heavy iron tire iron leaning against the wall.

The door lock blew open with a loud pop.
The door swung wide, and a man clad in black body armor stepped into the darkness, his weapon raised, the laser sight scanning the room. The red dot danced across the concrete floor, moving closer and closer to where Tessa was hiding.
