Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

🚫 "THEY TOLD ME HE WAS A MONSTER. THEY FORGOT TO MENTION I WAS ENTERING HIS LAIR." 🚫The door of the limousine clicked shut, sealing out the sound of the Chicago rain and the city traffic. Inside, the silence was absolute. The leather seats were heated, warming my frozen body, but my mind remained locked in a state of sheer panic.
Dante Rossi sat across from me, his long legs crossed, pouring amber liquid into a crystal glass from a built-in decanter. He didn't offer me any. He simply watched me, his gray eyes tracking the movement of the water dripping from my hair onto my collarbone.
"You were investigating me," I said, my voice bolder than I felt. "Why does the head of the Rossi syndicate have a file on a bookstore clerk?"
Dante took a slow sip of his drink. "Because you are not just a bookstore clerk, Serena. You are the daughter of Arthur Vance."
The name felt like a ghost stepping into the car. Arthur Vance. My father. A man who had abandoned my mother and me when I was ten years old, leaving behind nothing but mountain-high debts and a legacy of ruin.
"My father is dead," I said coldly. "He died in a prison hospital three years ago."
"He died owing me fifteen million dollars," Dante countered smoothly. "Fifteen million that he stole from my family's legitimate enterprises before he was caught. For three years, I have been tracking the assets he hid. And three weeks ago, my men found the Swiss accounts. Do you know whose name is listed as the sole beneficiary?"
My breath hitched. "No. No, that's impossible. I don't have any money. If I had fifteen million dollars, do you think I'd be working for minimum wage at a boutique bookstore in Wicker Park?"
"I know you don't have it," Dante said, leaning forward. The proximity was intoxicating and terrifying. "Because your ex-fiancé, Owen Carter, has been systematically draining those accounts using a forged power of attorney. He’s been using your father's stolen money to fund his gambling debts and buy his way into the city's political elite."
The puzzle pieces slammed together with sickening clarity. Owen hadn't been stalking me out of obsession or broken-hearted love. He had been keeping me isolated, terrified, and controlled so I would never look into my father's estate—so I would never discover the fortune that belonged to the Rossi family, a fortune he was stealing.
"He... he told me he loved me," I whispered, staring at my hands. "He told me no one else would ever want me."
"He lied," Dante said roughly. He reached across the space between us, his thumb brushing against the bruise on my wrist. His touch was shockingly warm. "He used you as a shield. He knew that as long as you were under his thumb, I couldn't touch him without risking the money disappearing forever. But tonight, you ran. You broke his pattern."
"So what happens now?" I asked, looking into the eyes of the most dangerous man in the city. "Are you going to kill me to get it back?"
Dante’s lips curved into a dark, enigmatic smile. "Kill you? No, Serena. You are my only leverage. Owen is meeting with his buyers tomorrow night to launder the remaining eight million. You are going to help me take it back."
"And if I say no?"
Dante leaned back, the shadow of the passing streetlights cutting across his sharp jawline. "Then I open this door, throw you back into the rain, and let Owen find you. By my estimate, he has about twelve hours before his creditors lose patience. How long do you think you'll survive when he realizes he has nothing left to lose?"

The car pulled up to a massive, iron-gated estate on the shores of Lake Michigan. The wrought-iron gates groaned open like the jaws of a mythical beast. I looked at the dark water of the lake, then at Dante.
I was trading a petty tyrant for a king of the underworld. But as the car stopped, I realized I didn't want to run anymore. I wanted vengeance.
