Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

💥 "THE PERFECT CRIME HAS NO WITNESSES. BUT IT ALWAYS HAS A MASTERMIND." 💥Three months later.
The Mediterranean sun warmed my skin as I sat on the terrace of a private villa overlooking the Amalfi Coast. The gray, rain-slicked streets of Chicago felt like a dream from another lifetime.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and the familiar scent of expensive tobacco and rain—a scent I had grown to love—enveloped me. Dante kissed the side of my neck, his lips warm against my skin.
"You're thinking too much, principessa," he whispered, sitting beside me and pouring two glasses of sparkling wine.
"Just thinking about how quickly life changes," I smiled, taking the glass. "From a bookstore clerk to... this."
"You earned this," Dante said, clinking his glass against mine. "The Rossi family is whole again. The fifteen million is back where it belongs. And Owen..." He paused, a dark glint in his eye. "Owen is currently serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary, courtesy of his European associates turning him over to save themselves."
"It really was the perfect plan," I said, taking a sip of the wine.
"It was," Dante agreed, looking out over the blue waters of the sea. "An accident that turned into a masterpiece."
I smiled, looking down at my glass, watching the bubbles rise to the surface.
I let him believe it. I let Dante Rossi, the most powerful mafia boss in the Midwest, believe that our collision on that rainy night in Wicker Park had been a stroke of pure fate.
I didn't tell him about the anonymous tip I had sent to his lieutenant, Marcus, three weeks before the incident, leaking the details of my father's Swiss accounts.
I didn't tell him that I had spent six months meticulously tracking Dante’s schedule, knowing exactly which street corner he would be walking past at precisely 9:42 PM on a rainy Tuesday night.
I didn't tell him that I knew Owen was a coward who would run the moment he saw a bigger fish, or that I knew Marcus was greedy enough to take the bait and betray his boss.
Owen thought he was using me as a shield. Dante thought he was saving me as leverage. But in the end, I had used both of them to destroy each other, clear my father's debts, and secure a life of absolute luxury and safety that no one could ever take away from me again.

"What are you smiling about?" Dante asked, reaching over to touch my cheek.
"Nothing," I whispered, leaning into his touch, the ultimate mastermind hiding in plain sight within the lion's den. "Just thinking about how much I love the rain."
