CHAPTER 4 — The Husband Who Smiled

Rebecca saw Ethan standing in the doorway at exactly 8:17 p.m.

The wine glass slipped from her hand.

Red wine splashed across the white marble floor like blood.

“Ethan…”

Victor stepped away from her instantly.

But Ethan did not shout.

He did not curse.

He did not lunge across the room.

That was what terrified Rebecca most.

He smiled.

A calm, empty smile.

“Surprise,” Ethan said.

Rebecca’s lips trembled. “You weren’t supposed to be home.”

Ethan tilted his head.

“No,” he said softly. “I know.”

Lily stood behind him, gripping his sleeve like he was the only solid thing left in the world.

Rebecca’s eyes moved to her daughter.

And in that moment, Ethan saw it.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

Because Rebecca knew Lily had chosen a side.

“Baby,” Rebecca said quickly, “go upstairs.”

Lily didn’t move.

Ethan placed one protective hand on his daughter’s shoulder.

“She stays.”

Victor cleared his throat and tried to regain control.

“Look, man, this isn’t what it looks like.”

Ethan laughed once.

Cold.

“It looks like my wife is kissing another man in the house I paid for.”

Rebecca’s face hardened.

For the first time, the mask dropped.

“You were never here,” she snapped. “You don’t get to act shocked now.”

Ethan stared at her.

Fifteen years of sacrifice.

Fifteen years of loneliness.

And somehow, she had turned herself into the victim.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“You chose work over us.”

“I chose work for you.”

“No,” she said. “You chose money.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“And you chose him.”

Silence.

Victor reached for his jacket.

“I’m leaving.”

“No,” Ethan said.

Victor froze.

Ethan pulled out his phone and placed it on the kitchen counter.

On the screen was a recording.

Rebecca’s voice filled the room.

“He trusts me completely. He’ll never see it coming.”

Rebecca went pale.

Victor whispered, “What the hell is that?”

Ethan looked between them.

“That,” he said, “is the sound of both of you going to prison.”

Rebecca lunged for the phone.

Ethan moved faster.

He grabbed it, stepped back, and shook his head.

“Careful, Rebecca. There are already three copies.”

Her breathing changed.

The confident woman vanished.

Now she looked like a trapped animal.

“You wouldn’t destroy me,” she whispered.

Ethan stared at the woman he had once loved more than his own life.

“No,” he said.

Then he looked at Lily.

“You did that yourself.”

But Rebecca wasn’t finished.

Her eyes darkened.

And before anyone could stop her...

She reached into the drawer beside the sink.

The drawer where Ethan kept the emergency house key.

Except Rebecca wasn’t reaching for a key.

She pulled out a small black pistol.

Lily screamed.

And Ethan finally understood.

May you like

The accident was never meant to happen at the lake.

It was meant to happen tonight.
