CHAPTER 2: The Secret Was Never About the Accident

Emily couldn't sleep.

She stared at the drawing until sunrise, praying there had to be another explanation.

Maybe Noah had imagined it.

Maybe Daniel had simply been there after the accident.

Maybe...

But deep inside, she already knew the truth was much darker.

The next morning, while Daniel took Noah to school, Emily searched the garage.

Inside the trunk of Daniel's old sedan, hidden beneath a blanket, she found something wrapped in plastic.

A woman's silver bracelet.

Bent.

Covered with dried mud.

The initials engraved on it read:

"S.M."

Emily recognized it immediately.

It belonged to Sarah Mitchell.

The woman everyone believed had died in a tragic car accident six months earlier.

Daniel had attended Sarah's funeral.

He had even cried.

Suddenly, Emily heard the garage door opening.

Daniel was home.

She barely had time to hide before he walked in.

For several terrifying seconds, he stood perfectly still, staring directly toward the shelf where she was hiding.

Then...

His phone rang.

He answered in a low voice.

"No... she doesn't know yet."

A long silence.

Then he spoke words Emily would never forget.

"If Noah talks, everything is over."

Emily covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.

Her own husband wasn't protecting their son.

He was protecting himself.

That afternoon, Emily picked Noah up from school early.

As they drove away, Noah quietly reached into his backpack and handed her a tiny flash drive.

"I found it in Daddy's car," he whispered.

"He said nobody could ever see what's inside."

Emily plugged it into her laptop that night.

One video file appeared.

The timestamp matched the night Sarah died.

Her hands trembled as she pressed Play.

The screen lit up.

A dashboard camera recording.

Rain poured across the windshield.

Daniel's voice could be heard arguing with Sarah.

Then...

A loud scream.

The camera shook violently.

The car stopped near the bridge.

The driver's door opened.

Daniel stepped outside.

He looked directly into the camera...

...and smiled.

Before Emily could watch another second, every light in the house suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then she heard footsteps upstairs.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming toward her bedroom.

A familiar voice whispered through the darkness.

May you like

"Emily..."

"I know what you're watching."
