CHAPTER 4: The Grave Was Empty… But the Truth Was Buried Deeper

The headlines spread across the country within hours.

"Murder Victim Walks Into Court Alive."

Everyone believed the nightmare was over.

Daniel was arrested.

Sarah was alive.

Emily and Noah were finally safe.

Or so they thought.

Three days later, Sarah asked Emily to meet her alone.

"No police," she insisted.

"There are things I couldn't say in court."

Emily agreed.

They met inside an abandoned lakeside cabin where Sarah had been hiding.

Sarah placed a thick envelope on the table.

"I never disappeared because I was afraid of Daniel," she whispered.

"I disappeared because Daniel wasn't the one giving the orders."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Sarah slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Powerful politicians.

Judges.

Business executives.

And one picture froze Emily's heart.

Daniel...

Standing beside Emily's own father.

Richard Collins.

Smiling.

Sarah's voice trembled.

"Your father created the money-laundering network years ago."

"Daniel only worked for him."

Emily felt the room spinning.

"No... my father died ten years ago."

Sarah looked at her with pity.

"No, Emily."

"He only made you believe he did."

She slid one final photo across the table.

It showed a man leaving a private airport just two weeks earlier.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably...

Richard Collins.

Alive.

Emily's hands shook violently.

Everything she believed about her childhood...

Her family...

Even her inheritance...

Had been a lie.

Suddenly...

Sarah's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned white.

"They found us."

"What?"

"There isn't much time."

Before Emily could react...

A deafening gunshot shattered the cabin window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Another bullet slammed into the wall inches from Noah's head.

Outside...

Three black SUVs surrounded the cabin.

Men dressed in black stepped out one by one.

Each of them wore the same silver emblem on their jackets.

A phoenix rising from the flames.

Sarah whispered the words that changed everything.

"They don't work for Daniel..."

"They work for your father."

Then every light inside the cabin went out.

The front door slowly creaked open.

A calm, familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

"Emily..."

May you like

"You've been looking for me."

"I've been waiting for you."
