Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Contract

The rooftop restaurant of the Grand Imperial Hotel felt as silent as a graveyard. The golden hues of the setting sun painted the scene in harsh, unforgiving light. Julian Vance—heir to the multi-billion-dollar Vance Financial Group—sat frozen in his custom Italian suit.

The photograph in his trembling hands was worn at the edges, but the man’s face was unmistakable. It was Arthur Vance, Julian’s late father, smiling down warmly at a newborn infant. On the back, in faded black ink, was a date: October 14th, 2008. Beneath it, a single line: "My secret light, Eliana."

Julian looked up at the girl standing before him. Her name was Eliana. Her oversized, faded blue dress was frayed at the hem. She wore worn-out sneakers that had seen too many winters. Yet, standing beneath the glaring eyes of High Society’s elite, her eyes held a fierce, unyielding dignity that made Julian’s stomach twist in knots.

“This is a fake,” Julian hissed, though his voice cracked, betraying the sheer terror rising within him. “My father died three years ago. If you think you can pull a cheap scam to get money out of my family, you’re insane.”

“I don’t want your money,” Eliana whispered, her voice steadying despite the tear tracks drying on her pale cheeks. “My mother died three days ago in a public hospital. Her last wish wasn’t for me to take your fortune. It was for me to look you in the eyes and hand you what belonged to her.”

The wealthy friends around the table—who had been roaring with laughter just moments before—were now whispering frantic secrets behind expensive silk napkins.

"Is that Arthur Vance’s illegitimate daughter?"

"If word of this leaks to the press, the Vance Financial stock will plummet by morning!"

"Julian’s mother will destroy her..."

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the VIP elevator slid open. The sound of sharp heels clicking against the pristine marble echoed across the terrace.

Victoria Vance—the formidable matriarch of the family and Julian’s mother—stepped onto the rooftop. Draped in diamonds and a tailored dark crimson coat, her icy eyes swept across the shattered porcelain on the floor before locking onto Eliana.

“What is the meaning of this commotion, Julian?” Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the air like a razor.

Julian hastily tried to shove the envelope into his coat pocket, but Victoria’s sharp eyes caught the movement. With terrifying calm, she reached out and snatched the envelope directly from her son’s grip.

She pulled out the photo. For a fraction of a second, Victoria’s composure shattered. Her knuckles turned white, crushing the delicate paper in her grip. But just as quickly, her face hardened into a mask of pure, poisonous hatred.

She looked at Eliana, standardizing her with supreme disgust.

“You,” Victoria sneered quietly. “Your mother was supposed to rot in silence. She broke her promise.”

Eliana gasped. “You... you knew about us?”

Victoria didn’t answer. Instead, she took a thick gold lighter from her purse. With a flick of her thumb, a bright blue flame ignited. She held the corner of the old photograph directly over the fire.

“No! Stop!” Eliana screamed, lunging forward.

Julian reached out instinctively to grab Eliana’s arm, pulling her back before she could burn herself, but the photograph was already engulfed in flames. Victoria dropped the burning paper onto the marble floor, watching it shrivel into black ash.

“There is no proof,” Victoria declared softly, stepping on the ashes with her heel, crushing them into dust. “Security! Escort this vagrant off the premises. If she sets foot near my family again, ensure she spends the rest of her miserable life in a cell.”

Two massive security guards grabbed Eliana by the arms. She didn’t scream. She didn’t fight. She simply looked at Julian—the brother who had mocked her minutes ago, now staring at her with a mix of shock and unreadable guilt.

“You burned the photo,” Eliana said to Victoria, her voice echoing over the silent crowd. “But you couldn’t burn the truth. The court date is already set, Mrs. Vance.”

Before anyone could comprehend her words, Eliana pulled her arm free from the guard's grip, turned on her heel, and walked into the elevator alone.

Julian stood frozen as the doors closed. He looked down at his shoes—and spotted a tiny piece of paper that had fallen from the envelope when Victoria grabbed it. It was a folded yellow carbon receipt.

Julian silently bent down, snatched it up, and opened it away from his mother’s sight.

It was a certified receipt from the City DNA Repository. Status: DNA Sample Submitted & Verified. Matching Profile: Arthur Vance (99.98% Paternal Match). Secondary Match: Julian Vance (50% Sibling Match).

Julian dropped his glass of champagne. It shattered on the marble floor—just like the plate had moments before.
