Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The clock on the wall struck 2:00 AM.
In the sprawling, floor-to-ceiling glass penthouse overlooking the city skyline, Julian Vance couldn't sleep. The echo of Elianaâs voice echoed relentlessly in his head.
âShe said⌠youâre my brother.â
Julian poured himself a drink, his hands still trembling slightly. All his life, he had been raised as the absolute, undisputed sole heir to the Vance empire. He was taught to look down on people who were poor, to treat those below his social status as invisible background noise.
And yet, that "invisible girl" carried his father's blood.
A quiet knock shattered the silence of the room. Julian turned to see Marcus, the familyâs old butler who had served Arthur Vance for over thirty years. Marcus looked pale, his eyes heavy with worry.
âYoung Master Julian,â Marcus murmured softly, closing the heavy wooden doors behind him. âI saw what happened at the restaurant tonight.â
Julian straightened up, his eyes narrowing. âDid you know about her, Marcus? Did my father have another child?â
Marcus let out a long, weary sigh. He walked over to the mahogany desk, pulled out a small silver key from his pocket, and placed it on the table.
âYour father was not a saint, Julian,â Marcus said softly. âEighteen years ago, before Vance Financial became a global giant, your father fell deeply in love with a woman named Claraâa simple pianist at a local theater. But your mother, Victoria, found out. She forced your father into an arranged marriage to secure the merger that built this empire.â
Julianâs breath caught in his throat. âAnd Eliana?â
âClara was pregnant,â Marcus revealed, dropping his voice to a whisper. âVictoria threatened to ruin Claraâs family, starve them, and make sure she never worked again unless she disappeared forever. Clara took her baby girl and hid in the slums, raising Eliana in complete poverty, never asking Arthur for a single penny... until she was diagnosed with terminal cancer three months ago.â
Julian grabbed the silver key. âWhat does this open?â
âYour fatherâs private safe in the basement of the old mansion,â Marcus whispered. âHe knew Victoria would try to erase Clara and Eliana from history. If there is a legal document that protects that girl, it is in that safe.â
Suddenly, the double doors of the penthouse burst open.
Victoria Vance stepped into the room, flanked by two corporate lawyers in dark suits. Her eyes locked onto Marcus, then shifted to the silver key in Julianâs hand.
âMarcus, you are fired. Get out of my sight before I have you arrested for treason against this family,â Victoria ordered coldly.
Marcus bowed his head sadly, looked at Julian with a warning glance, and quietly walked out.
Victoria strode toward her son, her presence suffocating. âJulian, hand me that key.â
âNo,â Julian said, taking a step back. âMother, is it true? Is Eliana my sister?â
âShe is a parasite!â Victoria snapped, her aristocratic facade crumbling into pure rage. âShe is the product of your fatherâs weakness! Do you realize what happens if the public finds out? Half of our stocks will be tied up in litigation! The board of directors will vote to remove you as CEO next week!â
âI donât care about the board right now!â Julian shouted back, shocking even himself. âShe grew up with nothing while I lived in luxury! You burned her motherâs last photo!â
Victoria smiledâa cold, terrifying smile that sent chills down Julianâs spine.
âYou think sheâs an innocent victim, Julian? Wake up,â Victoria sneered. âDo you really think a broke girl managed to hire the top estate lawyer in the country and file a secret DNA injunction at midnight all by herself?â
Julian froze. âWhat do you mean?â
Victoria threw a folder onto the glass coffee table. Julian lunged forward and opened it. Inside were surveillance photos of Eliana standing in a dark alley late last night.
Standing across from her, handing her a thick leather briefcase, was Richard Sterlingâthe billionaire owner of Sterling Global, the Vance familyâs absolute worst corporate enemy.
âShe isnât here to find a family, Julian,â Victoria whispered toxicity into his ear. âShe was sent by Richard Sterling to destroy us from the inside out. And youâre falling right into her trap.â
May you like
Julian stared at the photograph of Eliana accepting the briefcase from Sterling. His chest burned with a mixture of betrayal and confusion.
Was she really his sister looking for justice... or was she a weapon sent to execute the Vance family?
