CHAPTER 2 – THE MOMENT THE KING MADE HIS CHOICE
Daniel's heart pounded so hard he could hear it over the river.
Every instinct screamed at him to run.
But he knew better.
No human could outrun lions.
Especially while carrying one of their cubs.
He slowly lowered himself to one knee inside the shallow water.
He avoided staring directly into the male lion's eyes.
Years of experience told him one thing:
Predators often viewed direct eye contact as a challenge.
The enormous male stopped only fifteen feet away.
His amber eyes never left Daniel.
The lionesses spread out quietly behind him.
Not one growled.
Not one attacked.
They simply watched.
The rescued cub whimpered softly.
Then something incredible happened.
The tiny cub struggled free from Daniel's arms.
For one horrifying second Daniel feared the movement would trigger an attack.
Instead...
The cub stumbled toward the male lion.
It collapsed halfway there.
The great lion slowly walked forward.
Every tourist held their breath.
One woman buried her face in her husband's shoulder.
"I can't watch..."
The male reached the cub...
Lowered his enormous head...
And gently licked the mud from the little cub's face.
The lioness rushed forward next.
She sniffed every inch of her baby.
Then looked directly at Daniel.
No hatred.
No rage.
Only recognition.
The cub rubbed against its mother's legs.
Alive.
Safe.
Because of the human standing before them.
The king lifted his head.
For several endless seconds...
He stared directly into Daniel's eyes.
No one moved.
Not even the wind.
Then...
The impossible happened.
The lion slowly bowed his massive head.
Just once.
It wasn't dramatic.
It wasn't exaggerated.
Just a slow, deliberate movement.
Almost...
Like acknowledgment.
Daniel couldn't believe what he was seeing.
The king turned around.
One by one...
The lionesses followed.
The cub looked back one final time before disappearing into the tall grass beside its family.
The tourists exploded into tears and cheers.
Some hugged each other.
Others simply cried.
One man whispered,
"I think...
we just witnessed something humans weren't supposed to see."
Daniel smiled weakly.
He thought the story was over.
