CHAPTER 1 — The Kitchen Behind the Mansion

The music never stopped.

Crystal glasses clinked.

Someone inside laughed so loudly the sound echoed through the marble hallway.

Yet only a few feet away...

A six-year-old boy was eating spoiled rice in silence.

Daniel Carter stood frozen in the service doorway, gripping the strap of his faded duffel bag until his knuckles turned white.

Five years.

Five years beneath the scorching Saudi sun.

Five years climbing unfinished towers, breathing cement dust, carrying steel that burned his hands through thick gloves.

Every scar on his body had a purpose.

Every paycheck had a destination.

Sarah.

Jamie.

Home.

He had survived heat that melted asphalt.

Sandstorms that swallowed entire construction sites.

Coworkers who collapsed from exhaustion.

Loneliness so deep it felt physical.

Because every month, without fail, he wired $1,800 to his mother.

"Take care of them."

That had been his only request.

Now he understood exactly where the money had gone.

Not to groceries.

Not to Jamie's clothes.

Not to Sarah's medical bills.

It had paid for imported wine...

Designer dresses...

Luxury furniture...

Garden renovations...

And the lavish dinner party currently happening inside the very house his wife had been forbidden to enter.

Daniel slowly placed the expensive chocolates onto the cracked kitchen counter.

Then the gold bracelet.

Then the stack of unopened toys.

None of them mattered anymore.

Jamie was staring.

The little boy's eyes searched Daniel's face as though he feared the man might disappear if he blinked.

Finally...

"Daddy?"

The word barely escaped his lips.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

"My boy..."

Jamie didn't run.

He walked.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like a child who had learned happiness could be taken away without warning.

When Daniel wrapped his arms around him, he felt bones.

Too many bones.

His son weighed almost nothing.

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What happened to you?"

Jamie looked toward Sarah before answering.

"We're not supposed to complain."

Daniel felt something inside him crack.

Sarah wiped tears from her cheeks.

"I didn't want you worrying while you were overseas."

"You wrote that everything was fine."

"I had to."

Her voice trembled.

"Your mother read every letter before I mailed it."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

Sarah nodded.

"She said if I told you the truth..."

"...she'd throw Jamie and me onto the street."

Silence.

Even the music inside suddenly seemed distant.

Daniel slowly stood.

"Tell me everything."

Sarah hesitated.

Then the truth began spilling out.

Gertrude had taken complete control the week after Daniel left.

She opened every bank transfer.

Controlled every dollar.

Confiscated Sarah's phone whenever Daniel called.

Forced Sarah to answer only when Gertrude stood beside her.

If Daniel asked questions...

Gertrude answered instead.

Sarah had begged for grocery money.

Gertrude laughed.

"If my son wanted you comfortable, he wouldn't have left."

Jamie wasn't allowed inside the main dining room.

He ate leftovers.

Sometimes only once a day.

When guests visited...

Sarah and Jamie were ordered into the old service kitchen so nobody would ask uncomfortable questions.

Prudence loved reminding Sarah of one thing.

"This isn't your house."

Daniel looked around.

The broken refrigerator.

The cracked sink.

The stained mattress folded against the wall.

Then he whispered something Sarah never expected.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head immediately.

"No."

"I failed you."

Fresh tears rolled down Sarah's face.

"You trusted the wrong people."

Before Daniel could answer...

A booming voice echoed from the dining room.

"Where's my daughter?"

Gertrude.

She was coming.

Heavy footsteps approached.

Prudence still stood frozen beside the serving tray.

Then...

The connecting door burst open.

Gertrude entered smiling.

Until she saw Daniel.

The smile disappeared.

For nearly ten seconds...

Nobody moved.

Then Gertrude forced out a laugh.

"Daniel!"

"My surprise came home!"

She rushed forward with fake tears already forming.

"My baby!"

Daniel never hugged her.

Instead...

He reached into his duffel bag.

Pulled out a thick folder.

And quietly placed it on the kitchen table.

Every bank transfer.

Every receipt.

Every confirmation.

Every lie.

Gertrude stared.

Her smile faltered.

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"You've got exactly one chance."

"Tell me where my money really went."

The party outside suddenly grew silent.

May you like

Because several curious guests had wandered toward the kitchen...

...and they had heard every single word.
