Chapter 10 - Maya’s GardenSix months later, the federal trials concluded in record time.

Daniel Voss was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, his corporate assets completely liquidated and redistributed to victims of his fraudulent schemes. Celeste took a plea deal, testifying against the remaining mid-level conspirators in exchange for a reduced sentence, her high-society life reduced to a gray prison jumpsuit and a concrete cell.

Arthur Vance and his primary international syndicate members were found guilty of international financial terrorism, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit homicide—charges that effectively sealed them away in a maximum-security black site where no amount of money could ever buy their freedom.

The morning sun warmed the soil of the small garden my mother and I had built behind our old family home.

We had planted rows of white roses—Maya’s favorite—along the wooden fence, their petals soft and untblemished in the gentle summer breeze.

I knelt down in the rich, dark dirt, pressing a small wooden marker into the earth beside the young rosebushes. Engraved on the wood were simple words: Maya and Baby – Forever in the Light.

My mother walked out onto the wooden porch, holding a tray with two glasses of iced lemonade. She looked tired, but the shadow that had haunted her eyes since the funeral finally seemed to have lifted.

She handed me a glass, sitting down on the wooden steps. "You still carry the badge like you're waiting for another shoe to drop, Lena."

I took a sip of the lemonade, looking out across the quiet backyard where the birds were singing in the high branches of the oak trees.

"I'm not waiting anymore, Mom," I said softly, touching the platinum wedding ring I now wore on a silver chain around my neck—the ring that had broken an empire, secured justice, and brought ghosts back into the light.

"The storm is over."
