Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Sundress

The world didn't just stop; it shattered.

Vincent Rossi, the undisputed king of the East Coast underground, a man who had stared down loaded barrels without a flicker of fear, felt his knees go weak. The crushed paper cup dropped from his hand, spilling dark espresso onto the cobblestones, mixing with the melted strawberry ice cream from the triplets' cones.

Ten feet away stood Elena.

She wasn't wearing the silk gowns he used to buy her, or the diamond necklace he had snapped around her throat the night before she "died." She wore a faded yellow sundress that matched her daughters' outfits, her dark hair pulled back in a messy clip. She looked thin, exhausted, and utterly terrified.

"Elena," her name tore from his throat, a raw, jagged sound.

The three little girls—Chloe, Maya, and Lily—sensed the sudden spike in danger. They scurried back to their mother, burying their faces in her skirts. Elena instinctively threw her arms around them, her knuckles turning white as she clutched the cheap paper napkins.

"Don't," Elena whispered, her voice trembling but carrying an underlying steel. "Don't come any closer, Vincent."

"You're alive," he breathed, taking a predatory step forward, ignoring her warning. His mind raced through seven years of agonizing grief. He had seen the charred remains of her car at the bottom of the cliff. He had buried an empty casket. He had hunted down the Bratva syndicate he believed had assassinated her, wiping them out in a ruthless three-year war that earned him the moniker The Reaper.

And yet, here she was. In a crowded street festival in Maine, smelling of funnel cake and cheap perfume.

"Vincent, please. Just let us go," Elena pleaded, backing away toward a dark alleyway between a cotton candy stand and a souvenir shop. "You have no business here."

"No business?" Vincent’s voice dropped to a lethal, quiet hiss that made the nearby festival-goers turn their heads. He gestured to the three identical little girls staring at him with his own piercing, ice-blue eyes. "They have my face, Elena. They have my eyes. And they told me their mother has a broken compass tattooed beneath her ribs. The tattoo I inked onto your skin myself."

Elena’s eyes darted frantically around the crowd, looking for an escape route. "They're not yours."

"Do not lie to me!" Vincent roared, the sheer force of his voice causing the triplets to whimpering.

Immediately, Vincent softened his stance, a rare flash of remorse crossing his hardened features. He looked at the girls. Three of them. Seven years old. The timeline was flawless. She had been pregnant when she staged her death.

Before he could say another word, three large men in casual clothing but with unmistakable military posture stepped out from the festival crowd, flanking Vincent. They were his elite security detail, their hands resting discreetly beneath their jackets.

"Boss?" the lead bodyguard, Marcus, murmured. "We have a perimeter. Do you want us to secure the assets?"

Assets. The word made Elena gasp in horror. She grabbed her daughters' hands. "Run!" she screamed.

But they didn't get far. Vincent’s men moved like shadows, blocking the entrance to the alley. Elena was trapped, backing up against a brick wall, shielding her crying daughters with her own body.

Vincent walked toward them slowly, his expensive leather shoes clicking ominous rhythms against the stone. He stopped just inches from her. The scent of her—lavender and rain—hit him like a physical blow.

"Seven years, Elena," Vincent whispered, his eyes blazing with a mixture of profound love and burning fury. "You let me burn the world down looking for you. You let me believe I was a monster who got the only woman he loved killed. Now, you are coming with me. All four of you."

Elena looked up, defiance shining through her tears. "If I come with you, Vincent, the real monsters will find us. You think you rule the underworld? You're just a pawn in a game you don't even know is being played."
