Chapter 6 - The Compass Aligns

Three months later.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Rossi empire for seven years seemed to have finally cleared. The Consortium, exposed by the digital files Vincent had seized from Vance’s ship, had been systematically dismantled by international law enforcement—and what the law couldn't touch, Vincent’s syndicate erased.

The Rossi mansion was no longer a fortress; it was a home. The barbed wire had been replaced by blooming rose bushes. The sound of gunfire was replaced by the chaotic, beautiful laughter of three identical little girls chasing a golden retriever puppy across the vast green lawns.

Vincent stood on the back patio, wearing a simple white linen shirt, a glass of lemonade in his hand. He watched Chloe and Maya attempt to teach the puppy how to roll over, while Lily sat on the grass, drawing a picture.

A pair of soft arms wrapped around his waist from behind. Elena pressed her cheek against his back.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

Vincent turned around, placing his hands on her waist. "I'm thinking about how I spent seven years believing my life was over. And now, I have everything."

"Are you happy, Vincent?"

"Perfectly," he smiled, kissing her forehead. "For the first time in my life, the compass isn't broken. It brought me straight to you."

Suddenly, Marcus walked out onto the patio. His face wasn't tense or worried; he looked relaxed, but he held a single, sealed cream-colored envelope in his hand.

"Sorry to disturb you, Boss. But this just arrived via certified courier. It’s addressed to both of you."

Vincent frowned slightly, taking the envelope. The paper was expensive, heavy cardstock. There was no return address, only a gold wax seal.

The seal was an image of an eye wrapped in thorns—the Consortium.

Vincent’s blood ran cold. How? Vance was dead. The council was destroyed.

Elena noticed his expression and gripped his arm. "Vincent... what is it?"

With trembling fingers, Vincent broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of paper. Written on it, in elegant calligraphy, was a message that flipped his entire world completely upside down:

Dear Vincent and Elena,

You played your parts beautifully. Grandmaster Vance had grown arrogant, greedy, and uncontrollable. He believed he was above the council. He needed to be eliminated, but a direct execution would have caused a civil war within our ranks.

Thank you for taking care of that nuisance for us.

The fifty billion dollar debt your father owed? Consider it settled as payment for your services. We will leave your family in peace. After all, we must take care of our own.

Elena, give our love to the girls. Especially Chloe. Tell her that her Grandfather Victor says hello from the shadows. Yes, Vincent... your father is very much alive. And he is the True Grandmaster.

Welcome to the family, girls.

The letter slipped from Vincent’s numb fingers, drifting to the stone floor.

He looked out at the lawn. He looked at little Chloe, who had just turned around, staring up at the balcony with a strange, knowing smile on her face—a smile that looked exactly like the portrait of Victor Rossi hanging in the forbidden wing of the mansion.

Elena gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror as she read the dropped letter.

The war wasn't over. It hadn't even begun. They were just pieces on a chessboard, and the king making the moves was a ghost who owned the world.

Vincent slowly reached down, picked up the letter, and crushed it in his fist. He looked out at his daughters, his jaw tightening, the fire of The Reaper reigniting in his ice-blue eyes with a terrifying intensity.

"Marcus," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a lethal pitch that made the air turn cold. "Get the men. Lock down the gates. We're going hunting."
