chapter 1

The ballroom glittered like something out of a fairy tale.
Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. Hundreds of guests applauded as Ethan gently wrapped his arm around the woman everyone believed was the luckiest bride in America.
Claire smiled back at him, her white dress glowing beneath the lights.
From the outside, they looked perfect.
Too perfect.
As the orchestra played their first dance, Ethan leaned close and whispered, "Nothing will ever come between us."
Claire smiled.
But deep inside, she wondered why his heart was beating so fast.
For weeks, Ethan had been acting strangely.
Late-night business calls.
Secret meetings.
A second phone he claimed belonged to his assistant.
Every time she asked, he kissed her forehead and laughed.
"You're imagining things."
Tonight, she promised herself she would stop worrying.
Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of her life.
The guests raised their glasses.
The photographer captured every smile.
The future looked flawless.
Then...
A phone vibrated on the reception table.
It wasn't Claire's.
It was Ethan's.
He had forgotten it beside his wine glass while greeting important guests.
Claire wasn't trying to snoop.
She simply wanted to hand it back.
But before she could pick it up, the screen lit up.
One message.
One name.
One sentence.
UNKNOWN NUMBER: "Everything is ready. She'll never leave this wedding alive."
Claire froze.
The music continued.
People laughed.
Someone clinked a champagne glass.
No one noticed the color draining from her face.
She looked toward Ethan.
He was smiling.
Laughing.
Thanking guests.
Looking exactly like the loving husband every woman dreamed of.
How could the same man smiling across the ballroom be connected to a message like that?
Her hands trembled.
Maybe it was a horrible joke.
Maybe the message wasn't about her.
Then another notification appeared.
"After midnight. The lake. Make it look like an accident."
Claire felt the room begin to spin.
Their honeymoon resort was famous for its private lake.
Only Ethan knew she wanted to take a midnight walk there.
Only Ethan.
She slowly locked the phone and slipped it back onto the table before anyone noticed.
When Ethan returned, he looked directly into her eyes.
His smile never changed.
"You look pale," he said softly.
"Are you alright?"
Claire forced herself to smile.
"I... I'm just overwhelmed."
He kissed her hand in front of everyone.
The guests applauded.
No one realized they were cheering for a man who might already have planned his bride's funeral.
Claire knew one thing.
If she confronted him now, she might never leave the ballroom alive.
So instead...
She smiled.
She danced.
She laughed beside the man who may have been planning to murder her.
But while Ethan believed his perfect plan was unfolding exactly as expected...
He had no idea Claire had quietly sent one photo of those messages to someone she trusted with her life.
Unfortunately...
The reply she received seconds later was even more terrifying.
"Claire... that's not Ethan's phone."
May you like
"The man standing beside you isn't the one you married."
