Chapter 2 - The CEO’s Ultimatum

Hook: She thought she was taking my husband. She didn't realize she was inheriting my debt."Emma," Amanda’s voice was remarkably controlled, though I could hear the faint, frantic click of high heels against hardwood in the background. She was walking fast. Probably pacing her corner office while the monitors around her turned red with margin calls. "We need to speak. Woman to woman."
"I don't think we have anything to say to each other, Ms. Blake," I said, pulling out of the parking garage. "Unless you want your diamond appraised. I can tell you exactly what it cost, considering it was purchased with funds from the joint investment account I froze twenty minutes ago."
A sharp intake of breath. The mask was slipping. "Whatever personal grievances you have with Jake, you cannot jeopardize this company. The Vanguard merger closes in seventy-two hours. Do you have any idea what happens if our liquidity ratio drops below the threshold tonight?"
"The acquisition fails," I said smoothly. "The stock plummets. And the board fires you for failing to disclose that the core software of Harlo Reed doesn't actually belong to Harlo Reed."
"Jake told me the IP transfer was finalized three years ago!" she snapped, her corporate poise fracturing. "He showed me the signed deeds!"
I let out a soft, genuine laugh. It felt wonderful. "Jake lies by omission, Amanda. He showed you the transfer documents for the subsidiary coding. The core encryption? The engine that runs the entire predictive healthcare matrix? That stays with the Harlo-Reed Holding Trust. Which is entirely mine. Jake was an employee with a fancy title and a shared last name."
A long silence stretched over the line. When Amanda spoke again, the anger was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating pragmatism that made me realize why Jake had hired her. She wasn't just a distraction; she was a predator.
"You think you're destroying him," Amanda whispered. "But if this company goes under, the debt covenants kick in. The personal guarantees Jake signed for the expansion loans? They are tied to your primary residence, Emma. They are tied to your family's estate. If I fall, I drag both of you down with me. Come to the office. Tonight. Let’s make a deal before the markets open tomorrow."
"A deal?" I asked.
"Jake is a liability," she said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "I see that now. Help me remove him, and I will ensure your equity is protected."

I stared at the traffic ahead of me. She was offering to trade my husband’s corporate head on a spike to save her own skin.
"Eight o'clock," I said, and hung up.
