Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

Hook: When the house of cards falls, the king becomes the first casualty. The next morning, the financial headlines were a bloodbath.

HARLO REED TECHNOLOGIES INDICTED: CEO AND FOUNDER ACCUSED OF MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD. VANGUARD MERGER COLLAPSES AMIDST SEC INVESTIGATION. THE VALENTINE’S PROPOSAL THAT COST A BILLION DOLLARS.

I watched the news from the quiet comfort of my kitchen in Greenwich, sipping coffee. The roses from the day before were in the trash can outside. The Paris tickets had been refunded.

By noon, the doorbell rang.

I opened it to find Jake standing on the porch. He looked like he had been living on the street. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes hollowed out by a sleepless night spent with corporate defense lawyers.

"Emma," he said, his voice cracking. "Please. They're going to freeze everything. The feds are looking at my personal accounts. Amanda’s lawyers are already trying to pin the entire disclosure failure on me. They’re saying I forged the IP transfers."

"Did you?" I asked mildly.

"I... I altered a few dates," he stammered, stepping into the foyer without being invited. "To keep the merger on track! I did it for us, Emma! So we could retire, so we could have the life we always talked about!"

"We had the life we talked about, Jake. You just wanted a bigger stage. And a younger co-star."

He dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor of the foyer. It was an uncanny, sickening echo of the way he had knelt before Amanda just twenty-four hours earlier.

"I'll sign anything," he wept, grabbing at the hem of my coat. "I'll give you the house. I'll give you the remaining shares. Just tell the SEC it was an administrative error. Tell them the IP was always shared. If you don't, I’m going to prison, Emma."

I looked down at the man I had loved for fourteen years. The man I had stayed up with all night in that tiny Stamford apartment, eating cold pizza and dreaming of changing the world. I looked for a shred of grief, a tiny spark of regret for breaking my heart.

There was nothing. Only the raw, pathetic terror of a criminal who had finally been caught.

May you like

"The SEC doesn't care about our marriage, Jake," I said softly, stepping back so his hands slid off my coat and hit the cold marble. "And neither do I. An administrative error didn't buy that ring. You did. Enjoy the consequences."

I shut the door on him, locking it with a heavy click that echoed through the empty house.
