Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE MONSTERS CAME

Headline: "HE THOUGHT HE WAS SAVING TWO ORPHANS—UNTIL THE MEN WITH GUNS REVEALED WHO THE GIRLS ACTUALLY BELONGED TO!"The blinding glare of high-beam headlights sliced through the cracked windows of the rotting cabin, painting the peeling wallpaper in harsh, flickering white. Outside, the heavy doors of two black, unmarked pickup trucks slammed shut. The sound of heavy combat boots crunching on the wet gravel sent a jolt of pure, primal adrenaline straight to Alejandro Garza’s heart.
Inside his luxury SUV parked just yards away, Sofía and Lucía were screaming. Their tiny, high-pitched voices pierced the damp air, raw with a terror that no child should ever know.
Alejandro thrust the laminated photograph into his inner coat pocket. His mind was a chaotic blur. The man in the picture... Isabella... 'He deserves to know the truth.' What truth? Who was the dead woman on the mattress? And why did she have a photo of him and his deceased wife?
There was no time to think.
He slipped out of the cabin’s back window, dropping into the cold, muddy brush. Staying low, he slipped through the shadows toward his SUV. Through the tinted glass, he saw three heavily armed men in tactical gear surrounding the vehicle. One of them, a massive man with a jagged scar running from his ear to his jawline, tapped the glass with the muzzle of an assault rifle.
"Open the door, little rats," the scarred man growled, his voice carrying over the whistling mountain wind. "We know you're in there. Your mother's little game is over."
Alejandro’s blood ran cold. These men weren't random cartel thugs or mountain bandits. They moved with military precision. And they knew the girls.
"Hey!" Alejandro shouted, stepping out of the darkness of the tree line, his hands raised but his posture commanding. "Get away from my vehicle!"
The three men spun around, their rifles instantly training on his chest. The scarred leader let out a low, mocking laugh. "Well, well. If it isn't the grieving widower. Don Alejandro Garza. The king of Monterrey’s steel empire. You're a long way from your glass tower, patron."
"Who are you, and what do you want with these children?" Alejandro demanded, keeping his voice steady despite the hammer of his heartbeat. "This is my property. You are trespassing."
"Your property?" The leader smirked, taking a slow step forward. "This land might belong to the Garza name, but what’s inside that car belongs to our boss. Hand over the girls, Don Alejandro. Go back to your big empty house, mourn your pretty dead wife, and pretend you never saw this cabin. Do that, and you might live to see tomorrow."
"And if I refuse?"
The leader slowly clicked the safety off his rifle. "Then we bury you in the same dirt as their mother. No one will ever find you."
Inside the SUV, Sofía’s terrified eyes locked onto Alejandro’s through the window. She wasn't crying anymore; she was frozen in sheer, paralyzed horror, clutching her baby sister to her chest. In that split second, Alejandro didn't see two random orphans. He saw the desperate plea of innocent souls who had been hunted like animals. He thought of Isabella—how she had always championed the defenseless. He couldn't run.
"I don't think so," Alejandro said.
With a lightning-fast movement he had learned during his years of high-profile security training, Alejandro reached into his jacket. He didn't pull a gun—he pulled his heavy tactical flashlight and threw it with perfect, crushing accuracy directly into the face of the closest gunman.
Crack!
The man stumbled backward, howling as blood sprayed from his broken nose. Before the other two could fire, Alejandro lunged forward, tackling the scarred leader to the ground. The rifle discharged, a deafening roar echoing through the valley as the bullet went wild into the canopy.
Alejandro punched the leader hard in the jaw, once, twice, feeling the bone give way. But the third gunman recovery quickly, swinging the butt of his rifle directly into the side of Alejandro’s head.
Blackness.
Alejandro fell to the wet mud, his vision swimming, a warm trickle of blood running down his temple. Through the ringing in his ears, he heard the leader spitting blood onto the ground.
"Search him!" the leader barked. "Get the girls out of the car! Smash the glass!"
A hand reached into Alejandro’s coat, ripping out the plastic bag containing the medical records, the locks of hair, and the photograph.
"Boss! We got it!" one of the men called out.
"Good. Burn the cabin. Leave the rich man here to rot. If he wakes up, the fire will finish him."
Alejandro tried to push himself up, but his limbs felt like lead. He watched in horror as one of the men splashed gasoline onto the wooden steps of the cabin and struck a match. The dry structure caught instantly, roaring to life in a violent, orange blaze.
Through his fading consciousness, Alejandro saw the men smashing the passenger window of his SUV. He heard Lucía’s piercing scream as she was dragged out.
No... he thought, his eyes sliding shut as the heat of the flames began to blister his skin. Not again. I won't lose anyone else...
Suddenly, the night exploded.
A third vehicle—a massive, armor-plated truck—roared down the dirt path, its high beams blinding the gunmen. The truck didn't slow down. It rammed directly into one of the black pickups with a sickening crunch of metal.
A figure jumped out of the driver's seat, firing a shotgun with lethal precision. One of the gunmen dropped instantly.
"Get back!" a gruff, familiar voice roared.
Through his blurred vision, Alejandro recognized the man. It was Mateo, the retired estate keeper of the Garza hacienda, a man who had served his family for forty years.
"Alejandro! Get up!" Mateo screamed, firing another round that forced the scarred leader to dive for cover.
With a final surge of adrenaline, Alejandro forced himself to his feet. He lunged toward the scarred man who was trying to drag Sofía into the remaining pickup. Alejandro tackled him from behind, slamming his head against the truck's steel bumper. The man went limp.
Alejandro grabbed Sofía, pulling her into his arms. Mateo grabbed little Lucía, throwing both girls into the back of his armored truck.

"Get in! Now!" Mateo roared.
Alejandro scrambled into the passenger seat just as the remaining gunmen opened fire. Bullets peppered the armored glass, spiderwebbing the surface but failing to penetrate. Mateo slammed the truck into reverse, spinning the wheels in the mud, and tore away from the burning cabin, leaving the screaming men and the roaring fire behind them in the dark, suffocating forest.
