Chapter 6 - THE DEAD SPEAK

Headline: "THE FINAL TWIST: THE COFFIN WAS EMPTY—AND THE VOICE ON THE PHONE CHANGED EVERYTHING FOREVER!"The basement fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
The only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of Alejandro and the quiet whimpers of his daughters.
Alejandro’s grip on Sterling’s collar tightened so hard the fabric began to tear. "What did you say?" Alejandro whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of madness. "What did you say about Isabella?!"
Sterling choked, gasping for air. "The... the funeral... it was a closed casket. You were too devastated to look. Ernesto and I... we arranged it."
"She died of cancer! I saw her body in the hospital!"
"You saw a heavily sedated woman under my medical care," Sterling wheezed, a sick triumph in his eyes. "We faked her death, Alejandro. We needed her alive. Her... her clearance codes... her biometric signatures... they were required to access the deepest vaults of the Garza offshore holdings. We couldn't just kill her. Not yet."
Alejandro felt the ground slide away from beneath him. Isabella... alive?
"Where is she?" Alejandro roared, shaking the doctor violently. "WHERE IS SHE?!"
"If you kill me... you'll never find her," Sterling whispered, his voice fading as he began to lose consciousness from the beating. "She's... she's in the..."
Before Sterling could finish the sentence, the heavy wooden doors of the basement were kicked open.
A squad of state police officers, tactical shields raised, poured into the room, their weapons drawn.
"Police! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads!"
Leading them was Mateo. The old estate keeper was bandaged, his arm in a sling, but his eyes were sharp and determined. He had managed to crawl out of the overturned truck, find a working satellite phone in the estate’s main house, and call the federal authorities who had been investigating the Garza family’s financial discrepancies for months.
Alejandro slowly raised his hands, stepping away from Sterling.
"He's the one," Alejandro said, pointing at the bloody doctor. "He's the leader."
Within minutes, the basement was flooded with medical personnel and federal agents. Dr. Sterling and his remaining mercenaries were handcuffed and dragged away in heavy steel chains.
Alejandro rushed to the corner of the room. He sliced the ropes binding Sofía and Lucía. The moment they were free, both girls threw their arms around his neck, burying their faces in his shoulders.
"You saved us, Papa," Sofía sobbed. "You saved us."
Alejandro held them close, tears streaming down his face. "We're going home. I promise you, we are going home."
Two weeks later.
The morning sun rose over the mountains of Valle de Bravo, casting a warm, golden glow over the grand Garza hacienda. The white sheets had been removed from the furniture. The windows were open, letting in the fresh mountain air and the scent of pine.
The dark shadows of the past had finally been dragged into the light. Ernesto Garza had been arrested in Monterrey, charged with conspiracy and financial fraud. Dr. Robert Sterling faced a lifetime in a maximum-security prison for murder, kidnapping, and treason.
Alejandro stood on the grand stone veranda, holding a cup of coffee.
In the courtyard below, Sofía and Lucía were running through the green grass. They were no longer wearing dirty, stained dresses. They wore bright, beautiful yellow sun dresses, and their feet were healed, protected by new leather shoes. They laughed, their voices echoing through the valley—a sound of pure, untainted joy that the hacienda hadn't heard in years.
Alejandro smiled, a genuine, deep-seated peace settling over his heart for the first time in two years. He had his daughters. He had a purpose. He had a family.
Suddenly, his satellite phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out. The screen showed an blocked, private number.
Normally, he would have ignored it. But a strange, inexplicable instinct compelled him to press answer.
"Hello?" Alejandro said.
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. The only sound was the gentle hiss of static, and the faint, unmistakable sound of wind chimes in the background—wind chimes that sounded exactly like the ones Isabella used to hang on the veranda.
Then, a voice spoke.
It was a soft, trembling whisper, filled with a lifetime of love, pain, and longing.
"Alejandro...?"
The coffee cup slipped from Alejandro's hand, shattering on the stone floor.
"Isabella...?" he breathed.
"They couldn't keep me away anymore," the voice whispered, cracking with emotion. "I’m coming home. Take care of our girls... I’ll see you soon."
The line went dead.

Alejandro stood frozen, his heart pounding a frantic, beautiful rhythm against his chest. He looked down at his two daughters playing in the yard. They looked up at him, smiling, waving their tiny hands.
The nightmare was over. But a new journey—a journey to bring his wife back from the dead—had just begun.
