Chapter 1 - The Venomous TruthMy fingers trembled as I cleared away the pile of torn blankets from the deepest corner of the nursery closet. The wood was cold, damp, and smelled subtly of decay. And then, my hand froze mid-air.

Right where Rex had been desperately tearing at the baseboards, a dark, jagged crack split the plaster wall behind the shelving unit. Crawling out from that hidden wall cavity—glistening wetly under the soft nursery light—was a nightmare.
A nest of highly venomous pit vipers.
They weren't just passing through; a massive brood had infested the decaying hollow space behind the drywall, likely drawn in by a hidden water leak from the roof. The dominant snake, thick as my forearm with a diamond-shaped head, was coiled just inches from where Sara usually stood to organize the baby clothes.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Rex hadn't been attacking Sara. He hadn't "snapped." He had heard the subtle, sinister rustle behind the wood. He had smelled the foul scent of the nest. He lunged between my pregnant wife and the closet to knock her back, desperately ripping away the clothes to get to the threat before it struck her.
And how had I rewarded him? I had thrown him out into a freezing, torrential storm, denying him food and shelter for three agonizing days while he sat in the mud, silently watching over her window.
"Oh God... Rex," I choked out, tears burning my eyes.
I sprinted down the hallway, threw open the front door, and ran barefoot into the cold, muddy yard. "Rex! Rex, boy!"
The yard was empty. The grass was flattened where he had been lying, but my loyal dog was gone.

"Rex!" I screamed into the rain, my voice breaking.
That was when I noticed the front gate was standing wide open. On the wet pavement just outside, fresh tire tracks were carved deep into the mud—along with a trailing stain of dark, fresh blood.
