Chapter 6 - Race Against the ClockAs the police sirens wailed in the distance, I tied up Marcus and the syndicate representative with heavy cable ties. But as I grabbed my car keys to rush back to Sara, Marcus let out a sinister, wet laugh from the floor.

"You think you won, Leo?" Marcus spat, blood staining his teeth. "Check your watch."
My heart stopped. "What did you do?"
"We didn't come to this warehouse to hide," Marcus sneered. "We came here to wait for the timer. The snake nest was just phase one. To clear the evidence before taking the bonds, my associate set a gas line trigger behind the closet plaster. The moment your wife turns on the nursery heating system tonight..."
He didn't need to finish the sentence.
It was 7:45 PM. Sara always turned on the central heating in the nursery at 8:00 PM to warm the room before bed.
I had fifteen minutes.
"Get in!" I screamed to Rex, throwing open the passenger door of my truck. Rex didn't hesitate. Despite his injuries, he leaped into the seat, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
I slammed my foot on the accelerator, tearing out of the industrial lot, ignoring red lights and speed limits as rain whipped against the glass. The storm had turned into a full-scale deluge, turning the roads into rivers of slick black ice.
Ten minutes left.

I called Sara’s phone. Ring... ring... ring... "Voice mail," the automated prompt chirped.
"Pick up, Sara! Please, pick up!" I screamed, banging my hand against the steering wheel.
