Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Facebook Hook: 😭 BLOOD IS NOT THICKER THAN WATER! Michael's own daughter showed up at his hiding spot—but she wasn't alone. You won't believe the sick ultimatum she forced her father to make... 👇
Michael’s world shattered into a million pieces.
He stood behind the glass door of the cabin, staring out into the rain. His daughter, Sarah—the girl he had built an empire to protect, the child whose absence had left a hollow ache in his chest—was walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the man who had tried to kill him.
"No," Michael whispered, his voice barely audible over the sound of the rain drumming on the tin roof. "No, Sarah. Not you."
Beside him, Clara had crept into the hallway, her face pale as she saw the headlights cutting through the dark pines. "Michael? Who is that?"
"Go back to Emma," Michael said, his voice suddenly dead, stripped of all emotion. "Lock the door. Don't come out, no matter what you hear."
"But Michael—"
"Go!" he commanded.
Clara retreated into the bedroom, her eyes wide with fear.
Michael unlocked the cabin door and stepped out onto the covered porch. The cold wind whipped at his damp hair, but he didn't feel it. He was numb.
Sarah and Marcus Vance walked up the wooden steps. Vance had a smug, arrogant grin plastered across his face, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his expensive wool coat. Sarah stood beside him, her face a mask of cold, unyielding anger.
"Dad," she said, her voice matching the freezing rain.
"Sarah," Michael replied, his eyes locked on hers, searching for any trace of the little girl who used to hold his hand. "Why?"
"Why?" Sarah laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "You have the nerve to ask me why? For twenty-four years, I was your accessory, Dad. A prop for your perfect-billionaire-family image. You missed my graduation because of a board meeting. You missed my mother's fifty-first birthday because of a merger in Tokyo. And then, when I finally tried to build my own career, you used your connections to block me."
"I didn't do that, Sarah," Michael said, his voice pleading. "I swear to you, that was Vance & Sterling. They manipulated the data. They made it look like I did it to keep us apart. Look at him! He's the one who did this to us!" He pointed a shaking finger at Vance.
Vance chuckled, taking a step forward. "Oh, come on, Michael. Don't ruin the moment with desperate conspiracy theories. Sarah is a smart girl. She knows a sinking ship when she sees one. Your ex-wife Claire was smart too. She realized years ago that you were worth more dead than alive, metaphorically speaking."
"Claire was in on it from the start," Michael said, his eyes returning to Sarah. "Did you know that, Sarah? Did you know your mother sold me out?"
Sarah flinched slightly, a shadow of doubt crossing her face, but she quickly recovered. "Mom did what she had to do to survive you. And now, I'm doing what I have to do. Give Marcus the drive, Dad. It's over."
"And what happens to Clara and Emma?" Michael asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Do they get to 'survive' too? Or does Marcus bury them in the woods?"
Sarah frowned, looking at Vance. "Marcus, you said no one would get hurt. You said we were just recovering stolen corporate property."
Vance’s smile didn't fade, but his eyes turned cold as dry ice. "Of course, Sarah. Just recovering property. Your father is just trying to manipulate you. Like he always does."
Vance turned his gaze back to Michael. "Here’s the deal, Michael. You give me the micro-SD card. In exchange, I let you and your daughter walk away. You can go play happy family in the woods. But Clara and the kid... they belong to me. Clara has some outstanding debts to settle."
"She’s your wife, Marcus," Michael spat. "And Emma is your daughter."
"Emma is a liability," Vance said flatly. "And I don't like liabilities. Now, the card, Michael. Or things get very messy, very quickly."
To emphasize his point, Vance slowly reached into his coat and pulled out a silenced pistol, aiming it directly at Michael’s chest.
Sarah gasped, taking a step back. "Marcus! You said no weapons!"
"Shut up, Sarah," Vance snapped, not breaking eye contact with Michael. "Your father is a stubborn man. He needs to see the stakes."
Michael looked at the gun, then at his daughter. He saw the sudden, horrific realization dawning in Sarah's eyes. She had been used. Just like Claire had been used. Vance had no intention of letting any of them live. Once he had the data, he would eliminate all witnesses—including Sarah.
"You're right, Marcus," Michael said, taking a slow, deep breath. "I am a stubborn man. But I'm also a businessman. And I never make a deal without seeing the product first."
Michael reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out the micro-SD card.
Instead, he pulled out his heavy silver lighter—a gift from his father—and flipped it open, striking the flint. A small, bright flame danced in the cold air.
With his other hand, Michael pulled out a small, aerosol can of de-icer he had grabbed from the cabin's kitchen drawer.
"What are you doing?" Vance hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Making a market correction," Michael said.
In a fraction of a second, Michael sprayed the aerosol directly through the lighter's flame, creating a roaring, improvised blowtorch that blasted directly into Marcus Vance’s face.
