"AAARGH!"

Vance screamed in agony as the blast of fire scorched his face and eyes. He stumbled backward, dropping the gun as he clawed frantically at his burning skin.

"Sarah, run!" Michael roared.

He didn't wait to see if she followed. Michael dove off the porch, tackling the blinded Vance to the ground. The two men rolled into the wet mud, punching, clawing, and tearing at each other in a desperate struggle for survival.

Despite his burns, Vance was younger and fueled by psychotic rage. He managed to pin Michael, his hands wrapping around Michael's throat once more.

"I'll kill you!" Vance screamed, his face blistered and blackened. "I'll kill you and the kid!"

Through his choking throat, Michael managed to gasp out, "Not today."

With a final, desperate effort, Michael brought his knees up, slamming them into Vance’s back and throwing him off. Michael scrambled to his feet, but Vance was already recovering, reaching for the dropped pistol on the muddy ground.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the forest.

Sarah stood on the porch, holding a heavy wooden log. She had struck Vance across the back of the head.

Vance groaned, collapsing face-first into the mud, unconscious but still breathing.

Sarah dropped the log, her hands shaking violently. She looked at Michael, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the rain. "Dad... oh my god, Dad. I'm so sorry. I didn't know. I didn't know he was going to—"

"I know, Sarah," Michael said, rushing to her and pulling her into a brief, tight hug. It was the first time they had touched in years, and despite the horror of the night, a small piece of Michael's broken heart began to heal. "I know. But we have to move. He's not alone. His men will be here soon."

They rushed inside the cabin. Clara and Emma were already standing by the back door, terrified but ready.

"We need to get to the boat," Michael said, remembering the small dock behind the cabin. "It's the only way out. If we take the road, his men will cut us off."

They ran down the wooden stairs toward the lake. The water was black and choppy, whipped up by the freezing wind. A small motorized fishing boat was tied to the dock, bobbing violently on the waves.

Michael jumped in first, helping Clara and Emma down. Sarah followed, looking over her shoulder at the dark forest.

"Dad, they're here!" she screamed.

Flashlights cut through the trees. Shouts echoed across the water. Vance’s mercenaries had arrived.

Michael yanked the starter cord of the outboard motor. It sputtered, coughed, and died.

"Come on, you piece of garbage," Michael growled, pulling the cord again.

The motor roared to life. Michael pushed off the dock just as several gunshots shattered the night, bullets splashing into the cold water around them.

"Get down!" Michael yelled, steering the boat out into the dark, misty expanse of the lake.

The wind was brutal, spraying freezing water over them as the small boat battled the waves. Behind them, the headlights of another boat roared to life at the marina down the shore.

Vance’s men were pursuing them.

"They're gaining on us!" Clara cried, holding Emma close.

Michael looked at the dark shoreline ahead. They were heading toward a narrow rocky gorge where the lake emptied into a fast-moving river. It was a dangerous, treacherous stretch of water known as the Devil’s Throat. In the dark, it was suicide.

But it was their only chance.

"Hold on!" Michael shouted as the boat entered the rushing current of the river.

The boat surged forward, tossed like a toy by the roaring white water. Michael fought the tiller, his muscles burning as he steered around jagged rocks that loomed out of the mist like black teeth.

Behind them, the mercenary boat, larger and heavier, struggled in the shallow, rocky rapids. It struck a submerged boulder with a horrific screech of tearing metal, spinning out of control and crashing into the canyon wall in a burst of sparks.

But Michael’s victory was short-lived.

A massive log, drifting down the flooded river, slammed into the side of their small boat.

The impact was catastrophic. The wooden hull splintered, and the boat tilted violently to one side.

"Emma!" Clara screamed.

The little girl, thrown by the impact, slipped over the side of the tilting boat, disappearing into the roaring, freezing black water.

Without a single second of hesitation, Michael Warren—the man who had spent his whole life avoiding risks—dove into the abyss after her.
