Chapter 3 - ROAD TO THE dead end

The windshield wipers of the truck slapped rhythmically against the glass, barely keeping up with the torrential downpour. Daniel drove aimlessly for hours, watching his rearview mirror for any sign of the black SUV. His hands were locked on the steering wheel, his knuckles white.

At 2:00 AM, he pulled into the parking lot of a derelict, neon-lit motel on the outskirts of the city. He paid the clerk in cash, using a fake name, and locked himself inside Room 114. The room smelled of old cigarettes and damp carpet, but right now, it was his only sanctuary.

He dumped the contents of the canvas bag onto the stained bedspread. He ignored the gold printing plate for a moment and opened his father's old ledger. The pages were filled with names, dates, and bank routing numbers stretching back twenty years. But it was the final entry, written just three days before his father's fatal "heart attack," that made Daniel’s blood run cold.

“They think I’m just the mechanic. They don't know I kept a duplicate of the master plate. If anything happens to me, Daniel must find Marcus. Marcus knows how to use the network to disappear. Don't trust the police. The precinct is bought.”

"Marcus," Daniel muttered. Marcus Vance was his estranged older brother, a man who had cut ties with the family a decade ago to work as a high-level software engineer for the federal government. Or so Daniel had thought.

Before he could process the information, the old analog television in the corner of the motel room suddenly flickered to life on its own. The screen filled with static, then stabilized into a live video feed.

It was a live broadcast of his auto shop. The building was engulfed in massive, roaring orange flames. Fire trucks were surrounded by police cruisers. A news anchor’s voice cut through the static:

"We are reporting live from an active arson investigation at Vance Automotive. Police have discovered two unidentified bodies inside the burning structure. Authorities are currently searching for the owner, Daniel Vance, who is wanted for questioning regarding a double homicide."

They had framed him. In less than four hours, he had gone from a struggling mechanic to a wanted domestic terrorist.
