Chapter 4 - THE BROKEN BROTHERHOOD

The rain had cleared by dawn, leaving behind a cold, biting mist. Daniel abandoned his truck in a Walmart parking lot, knowing the police would be tracking the license plate. Wearing a heavy hooded sweatshirt he bought with cash, he took a series of city buses until he reached the high-rise luxury apartment complex where Marcus lived.

He bypassed the security door by slipping in behind a delivery driver, his heart pounding in his throat. When he reached apartment 14B, he knocked hard, three times.

The door opened slowly. Marcus Vance stood there, wearing a crisp white dress shirt, a mug of coffee in his hand. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he looked at Daniel's disheveled, grease-stained appearance.

"Daniel? What the hell are you doing here? You're all over the news!" Marcus whispered fiercely, grabbing Daniel’s jacket and pulling him violently inside, slamming the door shut behind them.

"They burned the shop, Marcus. Dad's dead because of this," Daniel said, throwing the canvas bag onto Marcus’s kitchen island. The gold plate slid out, gleaming under the modern recessed lighting.

Marcus stared at the plate, his face turning completely pale. "You found it. You idiot, you were supposed to leave that car alone."

"You knew about this?" Daniel demanded, stepping forward, his fists clenching. "Dad was laundering money and forging printing plates for a British cartel, and you knew?"

"Dad didn't forge anything, Daniel," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. "He was just the muscle who hid the physical assets. I’m the one who engineered the digital security for the entire operation. That plate isn't just gold. It contains a micro-encrypted nanotech strip on the back. It holds the access codes to a Swiss bank account containing four hundred million dollars of the cartel's untraceable cryptocurrency."

Marcus walked over to his laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "The people chasing you aren't just a cartel. They are 'The Syndicate'—a shadow group that controls half the politicians in the state. And right now, they know exactly where you are."

A sharp electronic beep echoed through the apartment. Marcus's security monitor showed the elevator doors opening at the end of the hall. Three heavily armed men in tactical gear stepped out, their weapons drawn.
