Chapter 4 - The Midnight Intrusion

The night fell over the city like a heavy black shroud.
Dominic did not sleep. He sat in the dark living room, a loaded pistol resting on the table beside him. In the adjacent room, Ellie slept soundly, her tiny hand gripping a toy bear Dominic’s staff had bought for her.
At 2:14 AM, the power to the Evans Tower suddenly failed.
The backup generators should have kicked in within three seconds. They didn't. The entire building plunged into absolute pitch blackness.
"Sir, they’ve cut the main grid and bypassed the backup relays," Marcus's voice hissed over the tactical earpiece. "We have multiple intruders entering through the helipad and the service elevator shafts. They have military-grade gear."
"Understood. Establish a defensive perimeter at the elevator lobby. I'm getting Ellie," Dominic replied, grabbing his weapon and a tactical flashlight.
He slipped into Ellie's room. She was already awake, sitting up in bed, her eyes wide with fear in the dark.
"Dominic?" she whispered. "Is the thunder back?"
"Yes, sweetie, but I am here. Your dad for today is here," Dominic said, picking her up and cradling her against his chest. "We are going to play a game. You need to hold onto me as tight as you can and keep your eyes closed. Can you do that?"
"Yes," she whimpered, burying her face in his shoulder.
Dominic ran toward the private garage. His plan was to use the armored SUV, but as he reached the garage doors, an explosion rocked the far side of the penthouse. The glass windows shattered, showering the marble floor with lethal shards.
Through the dust, three heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear advanced, their weapons outfitted with silencers.
Pfft! Pfft!
Bullets chipped the concrete pillars near Dominic. He fired back, dropping the lead gunman with two precise shots to the chest. He dragged Ellie behind the heavy steel workbench where the rusty bicycle still lay.
"Marcus! I’m pinned down in the garage!" Dominic shouted into his comms, but static was his only reply. They were jamming all frequencies.
He was trapped. The armored cars were on the other side of the garage, fully exposed to the gunmen's line of fire.
Suddenly, Dominic looked down at the rusty bicycle.
The red bike will take you to safety.
Julian's words, recounted by Ellie, echoed in his mind. Julian was a genius engineer. He wouldn't just hide a secret in a bike; he would have built a contingency.
Dominic examined the bicycle’s handlebars. In the darkness, he noticed a tiny, glowing blue LED light pulsing beneath the cracked rubber grip. It had activated when the building's power went out.
Dominic tore off the rubber grip. Beneath it was a small biometric thumb scanner.
He didn't hesitate. He grabbed Ellie's tiny hand and pressed her thumb against the scanner.
The scanner flashed green.
A loud mechanical hiss echoed from the bike frame. The heavy titanium downtube of the bicycle split open, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside was not just a microchip, but a compact, high-intensity EMP device and a set of keys with a GPS tracker screen showing a hidden escape route built into the penthouse's private elevator shaft.
"Hold on, Ellie!" Dominic cried.
He slammed his hand onto the EMP activation button.

An invisible wave of electromagnetic energy erupted from the bike. Instantly, the tactical flashlights of the gunmen went dark. Their night-vision goggles shattered with high-pitched pops, blinding them.
Dominic grabbed Ellie and the microchip from the bike frame, sprinted to the hidden service hatch behind the workbench, and slid down the emergency escape chute just as a grenade detonated behind them, blowing the garage into a fiery inferno.
