Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Cold Pavement

The silence didn’t just hang in the freezing air—it crushed everything under its weight.
Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. The color had completely drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a stark, ghostly white against the neon lights of the high-end shopping district. Her lips parted, but no sound came out except a pathetic, airy gasp.
Mom?
The word echoed inside Chloe’s head like a death sentence. Her mind scrambled to connect the dots, but nothing made sense. The woman standing before them wasn’t wearing designer silk or draped in diamonds. She wore a faded blue coat with frayed cuffs, scuffed shoes that looked a decade old, and a simple knitted scarf. She looked like someone who survived on pocket change and leftover soup.
Yet, Liam was holding her calloused, trembling hand with a reverence Chloe had never seen him show anyone—not even her.
"Liam..." Chloe’s voice cracked, sharp and desperate. "What kind of sick joke is this? Who is this homeless woman? Why are you calling her—"
"Shut your mouth, Chloe."
The tone of Liam’s voice wasn't just cold; it was lethal. It was a voice Chloe had never heard from him in the two years they had been together. The sweet, attentive, slightly passive boyfriend who carried her shopping bags and let her order him around was gone. In his place stood a stranger with eyes like chipped ice.
Liam slowly let go of his mother’s hand, stepping between the old woman and Chloe.
"I gave you every chance," Liam said softly, his voice barely rising above the howling winter wind. "I thought you were just spoiled. I thought you were just arrogant because of your family’s money. But today... today you showed me who you really are."
"She insulted us first!" Chloe shrieked, her hand pointing violently at the old woman. "She had the audacity to tell me what to wear! Look at her, Liam! She’s trash! If anyone sees us talking to her, my reputation—"
SLAP.
The sound cracked through the alleyway like a gunshot.
Chloe’s head jerked to the side. Her hand flew to her stinging cheek, her eyes wide with absolute disbelief. Liam hadn't hit her—he would never touch a woman. It was his mother who had stepped forward.
The old woman, despite her fragile frame, stood upright. Her eyes, which had seemed so tired just moments before, now burned with an ancient, terrifying authority.
"You speak of reputation, little girl," the old woman said, her voice smooth, deep, and chillingly steady. "Yet you stand on streets built by my sweat, wearing clothes bought with my son’s money, acting like a queen when you are nothing more than a parasite."
"You... you hit me?!" Chloe screamed, tears of rage springing to her eyes. She turned to Liam, expecting him to defend her, to tackle the old woman, to do something. "Liam! Did you see what she did?! Dump this crazy hag or we are OVER!"
Liam didn't flinch. Instead, he reached into his inner jacket pocket. He pulled out a small, velvet black box—the ring he was supposed to propose to her with tonight at the rooftop restaurant.
Chloe’s eyes widened with a flicker of hope. "Liam... you were going to..."

Without a single word, Liam flipped the box open, tossed the six-carat diamond ring onto the icy asphalt, and ground it under the heel of his leather boot until the platinum band bent and the diamond shattered out of its setting.
"Consider us over," Liam said coldly. "And Chloe? Check your phone. The real show is about to start."
