Chapter 6 - Checkmate at High Noon

The grand boardroom on the 80th floor of the Vance Tower was suffocatingly tense.
Marcus Vance sat at the head of the massive glass table, a victorious smirk plastered across his face. Surrounding him were six board members, all whispering nervously among themselves.
At the far end of the room stood Chloe, wearing a sharp designer suit she had bought with her last remaining credit card. She had retrieved the silver key from Liam’s apartment and handed it to Marcus just minutes prior.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus announced, slamming his hand on the table to call the meeting to order. "We are here to finalize the restructuring of Vance Enterprises. With the tragic passing of my sister, Evelyn, and the unfortunate mental breakdown of my nephew, Liam, full voting authority defaults to me."
"Are you sure this is legal, Marcus?" one of the board members asked nervously. "The media is already asking questions."
"The media knows what I tell them to know!" Marcus barked. "Sign the authorization documents now, or I will see to it that your individual subsidiaries are stripped of funding!"
One by one, the board members picked up their pens, cowed by Marcus’s threats.
Chloe watched from the corner, a cruel smile touching her lips. You brought this on yourself, Liam, she thought. You and your crazy old mother.
"Sign them!" Marcus demanded.
BANG!
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such force that the glass panels rattled.
Marcus snapped his head around, ready to order security to throw out the intruder. But the words died in his throat.
Walking into the room was Liam, dressed in a flawless, bespoke obsidian suit, his hair swept back, radiating an aura of undeniable power. Beside him walked Victoria, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Liam!" Chloe gasped, taking a step back. "How did you get in here?!"
"Security was relieved of their duties ten minutes ago," Liam said, his voice echoing through the vast boardroom. He didn't even glance at Chloe; his eyes were locked entirely on Marcus.
Marcus sneered, standing up. "You’re too late, boy! I have the majority vote! I have the vault key! You have nothing! Security, arrest this man!"
No security came.
"Looking for these?"
A voice spoke from the hallway—a voice that sent a jolt of pure terror straight through Marcus’s spine.
The board members gasped. Chloe dropped her handbag.
Evelyn Vance stepped through the doorway. But she wasn't wearing the frayed blue coat or the worn shoes.
She was dressed in a pristine white tailored suit, draped in a rare midnight-blue sapphire necklace. Behind her walked eight federal agents in blue jackets, accompanied by the Chief of Police.
"Ev... Evelyn?!" Marcus stumbled backward, knocking his leather chair over. "You’re... you’re dead! I have the death certificate!"
"Forged documents, Marcus," Evelyn said coldly, stepping to the head of the table. "A crime that carries a mandatory fifteen-year sentence."
"It doesn't matter!" Marcus shouted hysterically, grabbing the silver pen Chloe had given him and waving it in the air. "I have the majority of the board! I have the shell accounts! You can't prove anything!"
"Actually, Marcus," Victoria stepped forward, opening her laptop and connecting it to the boardroom’s main display screens, "that pen you gave Chloe wasn't a recording device. It was an encrypted transmitter."
Every screen in the boardroom lit up, broadcasting a live video feed from thirty minutes prior—a recording of Marcus in his private office, explicitly detailing how he was going to frame Victoria, bribe the board members, and liquidate the company’s pension funds into Panama shell accounts.
"You... you set me up!" Marcus yelled, turning on Chloe. "You betraying little viper!"
"What?!" Chloe shrieked, terror seizing her heart. "No! I didn't know! Marcus, you lied to me!"
"Silence!" the lead federal agent shouted, stepping forward with handcuffs outstretched. "Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, forgery, treason, and attempted extortion. You have the right to remain silent."
As the agents slammed Marcus down onto the glass table and slapped the steel cuffs onto his wrists, Marcus screamed in fury, dragging his eyes toward his nephew. "Liam! You ruined everything! You were supposed to be nothing!"
Liam walked slowly up to his uncle, leaning down so only Marcus could hear him.
"You thought I was weak because I chose to live simply," Liam whispered. "You forgot that a lion doesn't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep."
Marcus was dragged out of the room, kicking and screaming, his legacy destroyed in front of the very board members he tried to bully.
Silence fell over the room once again.
Chloe stood frozen near the window, trembling, her face pale. She looked at Evelyn, then at Liam. She realized with sickening clarity that her family’s fortune was gone, her reputation was destroyed, and the man she had thrown away was the undisputed heir to the largest empire in the country.
"Liam..." Chloe whimpered, crawling toward him, falling to her knees on the cold marble floor. "Liam, please... I was confused! I was manipulated by your uncle! I love you, Liam! Please, give me another chance! I’ll do anything! I’ll apologize to your mother on my knees!"
She reached out to grab his trouser leg, her voice hysterical.
Liam looked down at her. His eyes were cold, unyielding, and utterly empty of the warmth she used to take for granted.
He simply stepped back, leaving her hands grasping at thin air.
"You asked my mother to mind her business on that cold street," Liam said quietly. "Now, mind yours."
Liam turned his back on her and walked over to his mother’s side.
"Driver," Evelyn called out to her assistant at the door. "Remove this woman from the building. And make sure her family’s debt files are forwarded to the collection agencies immediately."
"NO! LIAM! PLEASE! NOOOOO!" Chloe’s screams echoed down the long hallway as security guards grabbed her by her arms and dragged her out of the skyscraper, tossing her out into the freezing slush of the street—the exact same place where she had insulted an old woman in a thin coat just twenty-four hours before.
Evelyn looked at her son, a soft, proud smile gracing her lips. She reached up and adjusted his collar.
"Ready to take your chair, CEO Vance?" she asked softly.
May you like
Liam looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the snow fall over the city below. The cold was gone. The noise had faded.
"I’m ready, Mom," Liam said. "Let's rebuild."
