CHAPTER 2 – The Woman Behind the Name

The next morning, Nathan woke up to chaos.

His phone would not stop ringing.

First, it was his lawyer.

Then his banker.

Then the chief financial officer of Carter Holdings.

By 8:12 a.m., Nathan was standing barefoot in the mansion hallway, his face pale, screaming into the phone.

"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?"

His mother rushed out of her bedroom in a silk robe.

"Nathan, what is happening?"

He turned to her slowly.

"Emily."

His voice cracked.

"She froze everything."

His sister stormed downstairs.

"My credit card got declined at the boutique!"

Nathan's father gripped the railing.

"That is impossible. She has no authority."

Then Nathan's lawyer said the sentence that made the whole family go silent.

"Actually, Mr. Carter… she has all the authority."

Nathan's breathing stopped.

The lawyer continued.

"Emily Carter is not just your wife."

"She is the majority owner of Carter Holdings."

Nathan dropped the phone.

For seven years, Emily had lived quietly in their mansion, wearing simple dresses, driving an old car, and letting them believe she was dependent on Nathan.

But the truth was far worse.

Before Nathan ever became successful, Emily had secretly invested in his failing company through a private trust.

She saved the business.

She paid the debts.

She bought the house.

She even paid for his mother's surgery.

And Nathan had repaid her by humiliating her in front of everyone.

That afternoon, Nathan found Emily in the lobby of Carter Holdings.

She stood beside a team of lawyers, calm and elegant in a black suit.

Every employee bowed their head respectfully as she walked in.

Nathan pushed through security.

"Emily, stop this madness!"

She turned slowly.

"Madness?"

He grabbed her arm.

"I am your husband!"

Emily looked down at his hand.

Two security guards stepped forward.

Nathan immediately let go.

Emily's voice was cold.

"Yesterday, you told me I was nothing."

"Today, I am giving you the chance to prove you can become something without me."

Nathan's mother arrived moments later, crying fake tears.

"Emily, dear, we are family."

Emily smiled sadly.

"No."

"Family does not throw wine at you."

"Family does not steal from you."

"Family does not laugh while you bleed."

Then she handed Nathan a folder.

Inside were bank records.

Hotel receipts.

Secret transfers.

And photos of Nathan with another woman.

Nathan froze.

His mistress.

His mother gasped.

His sister whispered, "You cheated on her?"

Emily looked straight at Nathan.

"I knew for six months."

Nathan's confidence collapsed.

"Emily... please."

But she was not finished.

She leaned closer and whispered the words that destroyed him completely.

"The papers you wanted me to sign last night?"

"They weren't divorce papers."

"They were documents transferring my company to your mistress."

The lobby went dead silent.

Even the security guards looked shocked.

Nathan tried to speak, but no words came out.

Emily stepped back.

"By noon, the board will remove you."

"By tomorrow, the police will receive every file."

"And by the end of this week..."

She looked at his entire family.

"You will all understand what it feels like to have nothing."

Nathan fell to his knees.

But Emily simply walked past him.

May you like

For the first time in seven years...

She did not look back.
