CHAPTER 5 – The Truth the Little Girl Revealed

The boardroom fell into absolute silence.

Nathan stared at the little girl standing in the doorway.

She couldn't have been more than six years old.

Her golden-brown curls rested on her shoulders, and she clutched a faded stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.

She looked so small...

So innocent...

Yet her hazel eyes looked exactly like his.

Emily knelt beside her daughter.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

The little girl smiled and walked inside without fear.

Every executive instinctively stepped aside.

Nathan's heart pounded harder with every tiny step she took.

Finally...

She stopped only a few feet away from him.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Nathan's voice trembled.

"Hi..."

The little girl tilted her head.

"Mom says strangers should introduce themselves first."

Several board members quietly wiped tears from their eyes.

Nathan swallowed hard.

"My name is Nathan."

She nodded politely.

"I'm Lily."

She extended her tiny hand.

Nathan reached for it carefully, afraid she might disappear if he moved too quickly.

The moment their hands touched...

Something inside him broke.

He had negotiated billion-dollar deals without flinching.

He had stared down hostile investors.

He had dominated boardrooms around the world.

But holding his daughter's tiny hand...

Made him cry like a child.

"I'm..."

His voice cracked.

"I'm so sorry."

Lily looked confused.

"For what?"

Nathan couldn't answer.

How could he explain six years of absence to a child who had done nothing wrong?

Emily quietly watched from across the room.

Lily suddenly reached into her backpack.

"I made something."

She pulled out a folded piece of paper covered with colorful crayons.

"I drew this yesterday."

Nathan unfolded it with shaking hands.

It showed three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

One woman.

One little girl.

And one man with a smiling face.

Above them, written in uneven handwriting, were the words:

"Maybe one day Daddy will find us."

Nathan completely lost control.

His tears soaked the drawing.

"You still believed I'd come?"

Lily smiled.

"I told Mommy heroes are always late."

The room erupted into quiet sobs.

Even Nathan's father covered his face.

Emily closed her eyes for a brief moment.

She had spent years trying to protect Lily from disappointment.

Yet somehow...

Her daughter had never stopped believing.

Nathan looked at Emily.

"Please..."

"Give me one chance."

"I'll spend the rest of my life making this right."

Before Emily could answer, the chairman's assistant rushed into the boardroom.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"There are federal agents downstairs."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

"They have an arrest warrant."

Nathan slowly stood.

"I know."

"They're here for me."

But the assistant shook his head.

"No."

"They're asking for..."

She looked directly at Emily.

"...Mr. Victor Blackwell."

Emily's expression changed for the first time that day.

Nathan frowned.

"Who's Victor Blackwell?"

Emily's face turned pale.

She whispered almost to herself,

"He found me..."

Nathan stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Emily slowly closed the folder she had been carrying since the beginning.

"I prayed this day would never come."

Nathan looked from Emily to the confused agents waiting outside.

"Emily..."

"Who is Victor Blackwell?"

She took a deep breath.

Then she spoke the sentence that stunned everyone in the room.

"Victor Blackwell isn't coming for you..."

She looked down at Lily, then back at Nathan.

"He's Lily's real grandfather..."

The room went deathly silent.

Nathan's eyes widened.

"What do you mean..."

Emily's voice trembled for the very first time.

"Because before I became Emily Carter..."

May you like

"...I was Emily Blackwell—the missing heir to the most powerful family in America."
