CHAPTER 3 – The Boardroom Betrayal

By 11:55 a.m., every executive seat inside Carter Holdings' boardroom was filled.
No one spoke.
No one smiled.
The atmosphere was suffocating.
Nathan walked in wearing his most expensive tailored suit, trying to hide the fear written across his face.
He still believed this was a misunderstanding.
After all...
He was the CEO.
He had built the company's public image.
The board wouldn't dare remove him.
Right?
The massive oak doors opened again.
Emily entered.
Gone was the quiet woman everyone had ignored for seven years.
She wore a navy power suit, diamond earrings, and carried a single leather folder.
Every board member immediately stood.
Nathan frowned.
"Why are you standing?"
No one answered him.
Instead...
The chairman walked directly toward Emily.
"Good morning, Chairwoman Carter."
Nathan felt the blood drain from his face.
Chairwoman?
His eyes widened as Emily calmly took the seat at the head of the table—the seat Nathan had occupied for years.
She smiled politely.
"Please sit."
Nathan remained standing.
"What is this joke?"
The chairman slid a thick binder across the table.
"It isn't a joke."
"It's today's agenda."
Nathan opened it.
The first line made his heart stop.
Emergency Vote: Immediate Removal of Nathan Carter as CEO.
His hands began to tremble.
"This meeting is illegal!"
Emily folded her hands.
"No."
"You signed the corporate bylaws yourself."
"You simply never bothered to read the ownership structure."
Nathan slammed the binder shut.
"I own this company!"
Emily pressed a button on the remote beside her.
The giant screen behind her lit up.
A corporate ownership chart appeared.
Silence.
Then...
One by one...
The shares appeared.
Nathan Carter — 14%.
Private Investors — 21%.
Emily Carter Family Trust — 65%.
Nathan blinked repeatedly.
"No..."
"No, that's impossible..."
Emily looked at him calmly.
"When your first company was collapsing eight years ago..."
"You begged every bank for a loan."
"They all refused."
Nathan remembered.
Those had been the darkest days of his life.
He had believed a mysterious investor had saved him.
Emily continued.
"I was that investor."
"I created the trust."
"I bought every share."
"I let you believe you built an empire."
The room fell completely silent.
Nathan's father whispered,
"My God..."
His mother covered her mouth.
"You..."
"You owned everything?"
Emily nodded.
"I never wanted control."
"I wanted a family."
"But all of you confused kindness with weakness."
Nathan suddenly exploded.
"You tricked me!"
Emily slowly stood.
"No."
"I trusted you."
"There's a difference."
Before Nathan could answer, the chief legal officer stood.
"There is one more matter."
He placed another folder in front of every board member.
"Evidence of corporate fraud."
Nathan froze.
Inside were copies of secret bank transfers.
Fake consulting invoices.
Hidden offshore accounts.
Every document carried Nathan's electronic signature.
His breathing became shallow.
Emily spoke softly.
"You thought I didn't know."
"I knew every dollar."
"I was simply waiting to see how far you would go."
Nathan looked around the room desperately.
"Please..."
"Someone say something."
No one moved.
The chairman finally cleared his throat.
"All those in favor of removing Nathan Carter as CEO..."
Every hand rose.
Even the independent directors.
The vote was unanimous.
Nathan collapsed into his chair.
"It's over..."
Emily picked up a small black envelope and slid it across the polished table.
Nathan recognized it immediately.
It was the same envelope he had opened at the family dinner.
His hands shook as he opened it again.
Inside was only one photograph.
A little girl.
About six years old.
Standing beside Emily.
Smiling.
On the back, one handwritten sentence made Nathan stop breathing.
"Meet your daughter."
Nathan stared at the picture in disbelief.
"What..."
"What does this mean?"
Emily looked him straight in the eyes.
Her voice was calm.
"You've spent seven years destroying the woman who loved you."
She paused.
"But you never even realized..."
"You were also abandoning your own child."
Nathan's world shattered.
The room spun around him.
Outside the boardroom, reporters had already begun gathering.

Inside...
A far bigger secret had just been revealed.
