Chapter 5 - The Snake's Trap

The ballroom exploded into utter chaos. Security guards rushed forward to tackle Mark, but Arthur raised a hand, stopping them. The billionaire’s face was an unreadable mask of granite, though his fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Elena stood frozen on the stage, the heavy diamond necklace suddenly feeling like a noose around her neck. The daughter of the man who set the fire? Her mind spun.
Mark sneered, stepping right up to the edge of the stage, surrounded by flashing cameras. "That’s right! Twenty-four years ago, a rival syndicate boss named Marcus Vance—my distant uncle—ordered the hit on the Sterling family. The nurse didn't rescue a Sterling baby; she rescued the arsonist's baby to protect her from the explosion! Arthur Sterling, you brought the daughter of your worst enemy into your home!"
Cassandra stepped forward from the crowd, feigning absolute horror. "Oh my god! Arthur, I warned you! She’s a viper! Security, throw her out! Strip her of the family name!"
Julian smirked, stepping up to take the microphone. "It seems my cousin is nothing but a fraud. The Sterling legacy remains with those who truly deserve it."
Mark looked up at Elena, his eyes gleaming with the same arrogant, abusive satisfaction he had felt on the porch. "I told you, Elena. You’re nothing but a charity case. You brought nothing into my life, and you’ll leave this world with nothing. You lose."
Elena looked at Mark. Then she looked at Cassandra and Julian. She saw the trap perfectly laid out. Mark hadn't found these documents by accident; Julian had fed them to him to orchestrate a public coup to disqualify her from the inheritance.
She took a deep breath. The timid, frightened girl who took a blow to the face at midnight was dead. The woman standing on this stage had survived poverty, abuse, and heartbreak.
Elena stepped up to the microphone. Her voice rang out, crystal clear and utterly commanding.
"Are you done, Mark?" she asked, her tone dripping with calm contempt.
Mark blinked, caught off guard by her lack of fear. "I... I just exposed you!"
"You exposed a forgery," Elena said smoothly. She turned her gaze to the back of the ballroom. "Viktor, bring in the guest."
The heavy doors opened once more. This time, two towering Sterling guards wheeled in an elderly woman in a wheelchair, hooked up to an oxygen tank.

Cassandra’s face instantly drained of all color. She stumbled backward, nearly dropping her champagne glass. "Nurse... Nurse Evelyn?" she whispered in horror.
Hook: Elena looked directly at Cassandra and Julian, a brilliant, dangerous smile playing on her lips. "You thought you played me, but I’ve known about your little plot since my first night in the manor. Let’s let the woman who actually carried me out of the fire tell the real story."
