CHAPTER 7 — The Grandfather Who Attended His Own Funeral

The man everyone had buried...

...had just declared war on his own grandson.

For several long seconds, nobody inside the shattered cathedral spoke.

Broken stained glass covered the marble floor like thousands of tiny jewels.

Smoke drifted toward the vaulted ceiling.

Children cried.

Paramedics rushed between overturned pews.

And Christian Ashford stood completely still.

His face had lost every trace of color.

His grandfather.

The man whose funeral he had attended at sixteen.

The man whose coffin he had carried with his own hands.

The man whose death had shaped the last decade of his life...

...was alive.

Director Eleanor Graves stepped toward him.

"We need to leave. Now."

Christian didn't move.

"He made me bury an empty coffin."

Eleanor nodded.

"We've suspected it for years."

Christian slowly turned.

"You knew?"

"We knew someone was controlling the attacks."

"We didn't know it was him."

Across the room, Chloe gently took Christian's hand.

It was ice cold.

For the first time since she had met him...

...the man who always had an answer looked completely lost.

She squeezed his fingers.

"We'll face this together."

He looked at her.

Then gave the smallest nod.

Together.

One hour later...

Ashford Manor went into complete lockdown.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Special forces occupied the estate.

Every entrance was sealed.

Every employee underwent questioning.

No one entered.

No one left.

Inside the manor's underground archive, Eleanor placed an old leather journal on the table.

"It was recovered from your grandmother's private vault."

Christian frowned.

"My grandmother kept journals?"

"Not journals."

Eleanor opened the cover.

"Confessions."

The handwriting belonged to Lady Eleanor Ashford.

The first page read:

If you are reading this, Richard has already convinced the world he is dead.

Chloe looked up.

"Richard?"

Christian whispered,

"My grandfather."

Eleanor continued reading.

"Richard believed compassion was weakness. He built an empire by destroying anyone who threatened his control. When our son refused to follow him, Richard ordered an 'accident.'"

Christian's breathing stopped.

"My father..."

Eleanor slowly nodded.

"Your father wasn't killed by strangers."

"He was murdered by his own father."

Silence swallowed the room.

Christian closed the journal.

His hands were shaking.

Everything he believed about his family...

...had been a lie.

At the same moment...

Nearly two hundred miles away...

A forgotten monastery hidden deep in the Scottish Highlands opened its ancient iron gates.

A black limousine rolled inside.

The elderly man stepped out.

Richard Ashford.

Ninety-one years old.

Straight-backed.

Sharp-eyed.

Not frail.

Not confused.

Still terrifying.

Rows of armed guards bowed their heads as he walked past.

He entered an underground command center built beneath the monastery.

Walls of digital screens lit up the room.

One monitor displayed Chloe.

Another showed Christian.

A third tracked Eleanor's government convoy in real time.

Richard smiled.

"My grandson inherited his father's heart."

He poured himself a glass of tea.

"Which means..."

"He'll always choose love over victory."

A younger adviser hesitated.

"Sir... should we eliminate Miss Bennett tonight?"

Richard looked disappointed.

"No."

"If Chloe dies now..."

"Christian becomes dangerous."

He turned toward the screen showing Chloe.

"I want him distracted."

"I want him hopeful."

"I want him to believe he can still save everyone."

He smiled again.

"Hope makes intelligent people predictable."

That evening...

Chloe couldn't sleep.

She wandered through Ashford Manor alone.

The old halls felt strangely alive.

Portraits seemed to watch her.

The silence pressed against her ears.

Then...

She heard piano music.

Soft.

Beautiful.

Coming from the ballroom.

She followed the melody.

Inside sat an elderly housekeeper.

Mrs. Whitmore.

Eighty-two years old.

She stopped playing as Chloe entered.

"I'm sorry."

"I didn't mean to interrupt."

Mrs. Whitmore smiled gently.

"You didn't."

Her eyes lingered on Chloe's engagement ring.

"So..."

"He finally chose someone kind."

Chloe smiled.

"I hope so."

The old woman suddenly became serious.

"Kind women don't survive in this family."

Before Chloe could respond...

Mrs. Whitmore reached beneath the piano bench.

She removed a small brass key.

"I've waited ten years to give this to the right person."

Chloe frowned.

"What does it open?"

"The only room Richard never found."

She whispered.

"Your answers."

Minutes later...

Christian joined Chloe in the abandoned west wing.

Dust covered everything.

The brass key fit a hidden door behind an old bookshelf.

The lock clicked.

The room smelled untouched.

Inside...

There were children's toys.

Old family photographs.

Boxes of letters.

And one videotape labeled:

FOR WILLIAM—ONLY IF RICHARD RETURNS.

Christian's hands trembled as he placed the tape into an old projector.

The screen flickered.

A familiar face appeared.

His father.

Alive on camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then my father survived."

Christian's eyes filled with tears.

His father continued.

"Listen carefully."

"There is something Richard wants more than money..."

"More than power..."

"He believes the Ashford bloodline carries proof to a fortune hidden long before any of us were born."

Christian frowned.

"A fortune?"

His father shook his head.

"Not gold."

"Evidence."

"Evidence capable of destroying governments... corporations... and every criminal empire that helped build modern Europe."

The image suddenly distorted.

Static filled the room.

Then...

One final sentence emerged before the recording ended.

"William..."

"Never trust..."

The screen went black.

The last name never played.

At that exact second...

Every light inside Ashford Manor went out.

Complete darkness.

Emergency alarms screamed through the estate.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Security radios exploded with frantic voices.

"They're inside!"

"They breached the north wing!"

"Protect Mr. Ashford!"

Christian grabbed Chloe's hand.

"Stay behind me."

Then a calm voice echoed through the mansion's emergency speaker system.

A voice Christian recognized instantly.

His grandfather.

"Good evening..."

"...my dear family."

The lights flashed back on.

Every television in the manor displayed Richard Ashford's smiling face.

He looked directly into the camera.

"William..."

"You've found the first clue."

"But if you want the rest..."

"You'll have to come to me."

The screen faded to black.

May you like

Below it, one sentence appeared in white letters:
