Chapter 3 – The Grave With Ethan's Name

Darkness swallowed the diner.
The lights snapped off with a sharp crack, leaving only the sound of rain hammering against the windows.
Someone screamed.
A plate shattered.
Then—
"RUN!"
Walter's voice exploded through the darkness.
Ethan didn't hesitate.
He grabbed the faded photograph and the newspaper clipping, shoved them into his jacket, and sprinted toward the kitchen as chaos erupted behind him.
A heavy crash echoed through the diner.
Someone had overturned a table.
"Ethan!" the man who raised him shouted. "Don't make this harder than it has to be!"
His voice wasn't frightened.
It was furious.
The waitress yanked open the back door.
"Go!" she cried. "I'll slow them down!"
The freezing rain slapped Ethan's face as he burst into the alley behind the diner.
He ran without looking back.
Every heartbeat pounded louder than the thunder overhead.
Twenty Minutes Later...
Ethan ducked into an abandoned train station on the edge of town.
His clothes were soaked.
His hands shook so violently he could barely unfold the newspaper again.
This time he read every word.
LOCAL HERO DIES SAVING CHILD FROM HOUSE FIRE
His eyes narrowed.
Something wasn't right.
The headline praised a police officer named Richard Hale for rescuing a three-year-old boy after a devastating fire.
Richard Hale.
That was the name of the man who had raised him.
According to the article...
The boy's biological father had kidnapped him before setting the house on fire.
The father was presumed dead.
Case closed.
Ethan frowned.
If Walter had been telling the truth...
Everything in the article was a lie.
His breathing became uneven.
He turned the clipping over.
Something had been written on the back.
In faded blue ink.
"Don't believe Richard."
His heart nearly stopped.
Below those words...
Another sentence.
Written in a different handwriting.
"Find Grace. She buried the truth."
Meanwhile...
Inside a black SUV parked outside the diner...
Richard Hale sat silently in the driver's seat.
His expensive suit was spotless despite the storm.
A younger man climbed into the passenger seat.
"We lost him."
Richard didn't answer.
Instead...
He looked at an old photograph.
The exact same picture Ethan had found.
Except Richard's version had one extra person.
A smiling woman holding the little boy.
Richard slowly tore her face out of the picture.
Then he lit it with a lighter.
The flames reflected in his cold blue eyes.
"No loose ends," he whispered.
The Cemetery
Unable to ignore the mystery, Ethan followed the directions scribbled on the back of the newspaper.
Just before dawn...
He arrived at the oldest cemetery in town.
Rain drifted through rows of crooked gravestones.
Everything felt unnaturally quiet.
Then he saw it.
A freshly cleaned grave.
Unlike the weathered stones around it, this one looked carefully maintained.
His legs felt weak as he stepped closer.
The inscription froze the blood in his veins.
ETHAN DANIEL CARTER
Born: April 17, 1998
Died: October 3, 2001
Ethan stumbled backward.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"No... that's impossible."
He reached out with trembling fingers and touched his own name carved into cold granite.
Someone had officially declared him dead...
Twenty-five years ago.
But he was standing there.
Alive.
A sudden voice came from behind him.
"You finally found your grave."
Ethan spun around.
Standing beneath a black umbrella was an elegant woman in her sixties.
Silver hair.
Sharp green eyes.
She held an old leather journal tightly against her chest.
"I've waited twenty-five years to meet you."
Ethan stared at her.
"Who are you?"
Tears filled the woman's eyes.
"My name is Grace."
She slowly opened the journal.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Court documents.
Then she looked Ethan directly in the eyes and whispered the words that shattered everything he believed.
"Richard Hale didn't steal you because he hated your family..."
She took a deep breath.
"He stole you because you were never supposed to survive the fire."
At that exact moment...
A red laser sight appeared on Grace's chest.
Ethan's eyes widened.
"Grace... get down!"
A deafening gunshot ripped through the cemetery.
Grace collapsed into Ethan's arms...
The leather journal slipped from her hands...
And hundreds of yellowed pages scattered across the rain-soaked graves.
On the very first page, Ethan caught a glimpse of a handwritten title before the wind carried it away:
