Chapter 4 – The Truth Hidden in Project Phoenix

The gunshot echoed across the cemetery.
Birds exploded from the trees.
The leather journal hit the soaked ground with a dull thud as Grace collapsed into Ethan's arms.
"No! Stay with me!" Ethan shouted.
Warm blood spread across her coat.
Grace struggled to breathe.
Her fingers gripped Ethan's jacket with surprising strength.
"They're... too late..."
Ethan shook his head.
"Who are they? Tell me!"
Grace coughed violently, blood staining her lips.
"Richard... was never the mastermind."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
She forced herself to whisper.
"He... only followed orders."
Lightning split the sky.
For one terrifying second, the cemetery glowed bright as daylight.
Then darkness returned.
The Journal
Grace shoved the journal into Ethan's hands.
"Run..."
"No! I'm calling an ambulance!"
"You don't understand!"
Her voice cracked.
"If they find that journal... thousands of people will die."
Ethan stared at her.
"What is Project Phoenix?"
Grace's eyes filled with terror.
"It wasn't a science project."
"It was a business."
Twenty-Seven Years Earlier...
Inside a luxury private hospital...
A conference room filled with wealthy businessmen.
Doctors.
Politicians.
Military officials.
On the screen was one sentence.
PROJECT PHOENIX
"Building the Perfect Successor."
A man in a black suit addressed the room.
"We are no longer creating better medicine."
"We are creating better people."
The audience applauded.
"Our children will inherit power."
"Our investors will inherit the future."
Present Day
Ethan flipped through the journal.
Every page became more disturbing.
Photographs of babies.
Hospital bracelets.
Medical charts.
DNA reports.
Each child had a number instead of a name.
Subject #03.
Subject #08.
Subject #12.
Then—
Subject #17.
A photograph slipped onto the wet grass.
It showed a three-year-old boy smiling beside his mother.
The child was Ethan.
Across the picture someone had stamped one terrifying word in red ink.
PROPERTY
Ethan's stomach turned.
"What... is this?"
Grace whispered,
"You weren't adopted."
"You were purchased."
The Real Fire
Grace fought through the pain.
"The fire..."
"It wasn't an accident."
"It wasn't your father."
"It was staged."
Ethan's entire body went numb.
"They needed everyone to believe Ethan Carter died."
"So they could erase him forever."
"And replace him..."
"...with someone they could control."
Every memory Ethan had suddenly felt different.
His strict childhood.
The endless rules.
The mysterious injections every month.
The medical examinations Richard always called "routine."
The headaches.
The nightmares.
None of them had been normal.
He had never been Richard's son.
He had been Richard's investment.
A Voice in the Dark
Slow.
Calm.
Almost amused.
"You finally figured it out."
Ethan turned.
Richard Hale stepped from behind a marble monument.
He wasn't alone.
Six armed men emerged from the fog.
All dressed in black.
No badges.
No insignia.
Only identical silver phoenix pins on their collars.
Richard sighed.
"I hoped Grace would die before telling you."
Ethan clenched the journal.
"You stole my life."
Richard looked genuinely disappointed.
"No."
"I saved it."
"You would have died in that fire."
"I gave you everything."
"A home."
"An education."
"A future."
Ethan's voice shook with rage.
"You gave me lies."
Richard smiled faintly.
"And yet..."
"You became exactly what we designed."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small remote.
One button.
Red.
"Every subject carries a failsafe."
Grace's eyes widened in horror.
"No..."
Richard looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"You've been asking the wrong question."
"The question isn't..."
'Who are you?'
He pressed the button.
Pain exploded inside Ethan's skull.
He dropped to his knees screaming.
His vision blurred.
Fragments of memories flashed through his mind.
A laboratory.
Doctors.
Children crying.
A little girl holding his hand.
A woman shouting—
"Take Ethan! Save him!"
Then...
One final image.
Richard standing over another little boy...
One who looked exactly like Ethan.
Identical.
Same face.
Same scar.
Same eyes.
Richard raised a pistol.
A gunshot.
Darkness.
Ethan gasped.
His heartbeat stopped for a second.
He looked up in horror.
"There were..."
"...two of us."
Richard smiled for the first time.
A cold, satisfied smile.
"Welcome back, Subject Seventeen."
"And no..."
May you like
"You were never the original."
